Pellet guns...

Think a .177 caliber pellet traveling at 425fps would be useful in self defense against someone with a knife?

I think the person with the knife would end up getting the upper hand....but it would definitely frazzle them for a few moments enough time to get away at least shoot 'em in the eyeball or neck if its close distance

If you hit him in the eye it provides a distraction you can use to bludgeon him with the air rifle
I bought a Wakizashi sword today. (thread/pics)
Do you think that would be useful in self defense in a knife fight

I'm a pretty decent shot. I was thinking about the neck, but I have no idea how deep it would penetrate the neck. If it penetrated just an inch or two that would probably be enough to end up killing someone.
They do however penetrate 4mm or so into solid wood.

Heh, I'm sure it would be quite useful. Unfortunately you probably can't conceal it too well. Which is one nice advantage of a weapon that fires a projectile.

Self defense is life and death. Don't play with that shit!!
177 @ 425 fps is just gonna sting.

No way it will penetrate an inch.
It won't even break the skin. Just a nasty sting.

As I just stated above, 4mm into solid wood. I'm not talking about using flat nosed, I'm using either a hollow point or a super point.

In the old days they used a stack of wet newspapers to determine actual penetration of a gun into flesh, should work with an airgun as well.
An air/CO2 gun really is a shitty self defense weapon. Its just not powerful enough.

Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely give that a try.

Its really a bad idea to rely on a pellet gun for self defense. Pepper gel or pepper foam (not spray) is much more reliable.
But nontheless, if you want to go that route you want this:

Anics SKIF A-3000
semi-automatic CO2 pistol, holds 28 pellets per clip and has relatively high penetration.

Look man. I've been shooting for almost forty years. I know all about performance and penetration.
Even handguns provide marginal performance against a determined attacker in real life situations. Shotguns are the real deal in self defense. Pellet guns are for fun.
And no, 425 fps is just a toy. Now maybe 1400 fps would do SOMETHING. But still against an attacker full of adrenaline, I doubt they wold do more than flinch a bit.

You have to think about shot placement in an extremely stressful situation. Think you could hit someone in the eye with a shitty toy rifle and stop them while they are coming at you intent on bodily harm?
I don't even think I'd put much trust in anything below a 9mm handgun, let alone a pellet gun.
That's just foolish to think you can defend your life with an air rifle. You'd be better off without it.
