what the hell is a symbol to banish an evil spirit? I mean, seriously, I know you guys are into some kind of spiritualism here, that's cool, but are you actually using a real physical means to achieve some sort of spiritual end?

physical and spiritual are all connected. they are one. like yin and yang, they affect each other and the causality of one may determine the other's outcome. in a word, yes!

So what are some spiritual things one can do to make some physically real things happen?

There are talismans, and amulets, and sigils, but all outward symbols means nothing other than an outer manifestation of one's inner state of being. Last year I brought simple stones from shrines of the Yoruba god and goddess Obatala and Oshun in central Nigeria (Yorubaland). These are two of the 'deities' that left Nigeria to Haiti and Cuba to form Voudun and Santeria. Now, these stones mean nothing to me, but I brought them to a couple of people for whom they seem imbued with numinous power. Capiche?
There was some vampyr film a few years ago in which a man raises a cross to a vampyr. The vampyr grasps it and crushes it saying, 'this means nothing without faith.' The outer means nothing without the inner. Faith in the outer forms is mere superstition. It is 'magical thinking' in a psychological sense of childish thinking. A Puerto Rican friend of mine insisted that I hang a crucifix over the sliding glass door in my bedroom, to prevent evil from entering the room. This is superstition - the most primitive form of religious belief.

Just tell it to go away...
Or if that doesn't work, try saying something like "In the name of Jesus Christ, I command you to leave". Evil Spirits hate that.

If you believe you've really got a problem with spirits, I suggest having ALL your friends over for a big, loud, music-filled party. Hire a clown AND a stripper. 2 clowns and 7 stippers. Pull at least one stranger in from the street. Inform all attendees that the party is being held to banish the nasties. In my experience, this almost always works.
Failing that, why don't you trap it?

Actually, I believe you are correct about festivities chasing away spooks. In the 70's my friends and I rented a house that had been passed down through a few generations. The adult children sold the property but continued to rent; stopped paying rent, and got thrown out. There was a crazy woman who wore nightgowns and Halloween masks outside on the veranda. The brother had been a safecracker in the 30's; and brother Howard died in the unfinished attic. There was dried blood and hair on the bedpost.
The house hadn't been cleaned in decades! Drifts of dust leaned on every railing of the staircase. They had a huge iron stove to boil bath water - no water heater. The walls were papered with religious pictures of Jesus and Mary and Joseph - everywhere. They used kerosene lanterns. Unfinished letters to President Roosevelt in the wood shed. (We eventually burned the whole shed when the wood was gone, and then the piano, to keep the furnace going).
We all heard loud creaky footsteps cross the floors and electric lights flickered on and off when they stopped. Friends swore they heard someone shout "Hold it right there boys!," and did so, thinking the cops had once again visited our new party house. No one was there. Candles reportedly went out and flared up.
As soon as we repainted every surface (I painted a rainbow-colored staircase railing; and we painted the outside red, hung a guilded portrait of a busty babe out front, and put a red bulb out front and one on a tall mast with a martini-flag under it. Made it look like an old fashioned whore-house, just to goof on the geezers who'd show up asking where the girls were!) laid carpeting, installed music system, hung posters and black lights - the spooky stuff left for good. Yep...spooks don't like Joy or merriment. I think the average haunting is by a very unhappy 'entity,' not necessarily an evil one.

V. nice, Markos - that's exactly what I was trying to get at. Larry, if you can make it a huge party over several days, then do so. More is more.
I've never seen a haunting in a pleasant, happy house. They are always dismal places and the people in them are equally dismal & unwillingly supply energy to the spooks - cuz they've nothing much to live for anyway. It's a closed loop.
So, yeah, bust that loop open, have a party, overload the nasties with enough energy to gain escape velocity and wish 'em well on their way up n out!
As a side note, I would try to ensure that unstable personalities of a negative inclination are NOT invited to the banishing party. You would not want a depressive guest to serve as an anchor for the unpleasantness. You'd still get rid of the problem, but it would walk out with your guest... and that's just mean. I've got a couple friends I would NEVER invite to such a shindig - I think you probably know someone like that - avoid em.

Neither have I. Now, do you think that's because the evil spirits are too vain to haunt a pleasant, lively house, preferring to keep true to their macabre image?
I mean, a scary movie that wasn't scary, wouldn't be very scary.

Nothing to do with vanity. I think that like attracts like and water always goes to water. Nothing more than that.
