Dude. First of all relax. Growing isn't easy, it takes some failures usually to realise your mistakes. Sounds like your effort was pretty good. Here's my guesses as to your problems. When you are trying to get colonization. Be sure that you have the correct parameters for heating etc. You want 84-86F and NO light and minimal gas exchange (fresh air). If you are getting colonization in the first place it should not just quit on you. After, try using a real casing mix with sand, soil and calcium carbonate. I know a lot of people on this page use just vermi or perlite but the bottom line is that mushrooms don't naturally grow in this. Stick to what's natural and you will have better results. At this point I would reccomend reading all of the FAQ's and TEK's in the info section of this page. Also consider buying "The Mushroom Cultivator" by Paul Stamets and J.S. Chilton, this book kicks ass and will help you out a lot. If you still have questions after all of that then post again.

You need to read some more, you shouldn't be expecting pinning to occur at 80 F.Have you tried growing cakes yet? Perlite w/ cakes is the easiest most foolproof. Well, its not fool-proof, as a fool will try to 'improve' it with spraying or massive overheating or something like that.

Buddy, i think your temps mayb be too high for pinning. You may want to lower it a bit, to cold shock them. Then after a week of the cold shock you should have pins.------------------ Flog and squee up the tree see the army flee, flee, flee.

I agree with dirtydog; get the Mushroom Cultivator!!!! And use the Simple Cubensis growing guide, Ramsey seal, and if u really want to case, try SOS with the 50/50 casing. Works great for me, whenever I try big trays, I get contams, and end up tossing 5 hardly used cakes guess I still have a lot of learning to do...good luck... -pin

ok i cased my 4 cakes, well i put 2 in a vermaculite/peat moss mixture and the other ones i put in a octagon shaped fish tank with some soil on the bottom. i keep both containers in a BIG bin and in the bin i have one of thoes cool mist humidfyers and i shut the lid. i leave that thing running for like 5 hours to get the humidity up, i look inside and the insides of the trays and fish tanks have fog and condesation on them so i know its 100% humidity. I also have a heating pad underneith that big bin, it keeps the temps ups to about 75-80 degrees in the bin, but i CANT get them to fruit, not even PIN. what am i doing wrong and how can i fix it??????????

You don't want 100 percent humidity if you are casing. What i did is used perlite with the sos cakes and an under tank heater. Humidifiers aren't really necessary for your first time and especially if you aren't doing a big type thing. Stick with perlite with a quarter inch of water and some hydrogen peroxide. did the mycelium run through the casing layer yet?? if it has, just wait, as long as the casing doesn't dry out or get contams, it should fruit with time. But make sure that you get the humidity to like 85-90 and air it out enough.~pin [This message has been edited by pin (edited February 05, 2000).]

yes the mycelium has been shown through the casing for about 2 weeks now, but its not fruiting, it just keeps spreading mycelium. does it need light?? and does it need heat?? shoul i leave a see-through plastic cover on it and then have humidity around it??

Yes, it needs light to initiate pinning. Did you try deep scratching?? Thats where you use a fork or something (i'm lazy and use my freshly washed little fingers...) and ruff up the casing all the way down to the cakes. Cold shocking might help, but I don't really know since it has already been in the terrerium. Usually you put the tray in the dark for a week right after you case it, then cold shock over night, then put it in the terrerium with light and heat. I think that at this point you should keep the humidity at like 85-90, where the water isn't like pouring down the sides of the terrerium, but it is collecting nicely on the sides. Keep the temp in the 80's. take off the plastic. -pin
