Poppy predators
    #7307806 -

If I wanted to plant an outdoor site should I be worried about predators eating the lettuce or pods? Deer and rabbits are the main concern around here. They ate my geurilla pot grow a few years back and now I'm considering scattering some poppy seeds in the same area.

I just need to know if I'll be needing to fence them off. Poppy lettuce is pretty bitter so I don't think it would be terribly attractive to deer or rabbits. Any experience or advice?

I can't grow it at my home. And I can't hide in the bushes all day and night with a shotgun to blast away critters.

It's not always that easy.  It's also besides the point of my question. :pirate:

You don't need to worry about deer or rabbits. I've grown poppies for years here in the Northwest where deer are everywhere. I do need to fence them out of my main garden, but they do NOT eat poppies (they hate the bitter taste and it's poison to them) - Sometimes, a stupid deer will "try" a taste, but they never come back. The main thing to worry about is:
a) BIRDS - they eat poppy seeds. But if you plant a bunch, and if you scratch them into the surface of the soil, they won't get them all, and a bunch will still sprout. Or start them indoors in peat pellets and transplant them once they sprout.
b) SLUGS - They eat poppy sprouts. Buy some "SLUGGO" - Apply.
c) WATER - Keep the soil moist until you see sprouts (10-14 days) Then cut back on watering frequency so the sprouts establish roots. Be very careful when watering before the sprouts come, NOT TO wash away your seeds or move them from their positions. Use a MIST SPRAYER at first until they have roots to hold them in place.
d) HUMANS - They will STEAL your poppies once the pedals drop.
