A few select poppy questions.
    #8430346 -

I realize the sticky thread is a compendium of useful info but it's so large by now it's gotten a bit hard to search and sometimes you get contradictory answers in different posts if you do, and I just have a couple questions to put forth, very simply, with the humble request of simple, hard-fact answers. These are simply from any gardener's view of "how do I plant, sprout, and grow these right?" which is mostly because I, as a gardener in a Mediterranean climate, never manage more than a few (3 to 5) plants living to maturity and never could tell what I did right with them or wrong with others.

If anyone wants to carry on the torch here and post their simple questions or give simple straightforward answers, do please feel free. If that managed to catch on, we'd have the sticky thread as an encyclopedia, and this thread would get a start as more of a facts pamphlet or as an approachable facts book. I'd even be happy to keep this first post updated to present the info to others like a FAQ.

  • What soil conditions do they normally thrive in? (rough pH range, vague composition, drainage, usual moisture, approximate ground temperature info useful for growing in pots)
  • What are all of the triggers needed for germination to occur?
  • What is the simplest way to reliably germinate new seeds without transplanting later (my luck with peat moss pots for such purposes has been 100% failure rates)
  • What climate conditions, specifically, do they thrive in? (temp average, high/low, frequency/quantity of water, amount of sunlight, intensity of sunlight)
  • Do you have, for example, 5 basic tips on caring for the (in my experience) delicate little things after germination?

I hate to potentially repost when the other thread has so much info available, but honestly I really haven't been able to confidently glean all of these answers for it, even if they're there. It's a whole lot of talking with facts scattered throughout, and that's a hell of a data mine to smelt all the ore from and still have room to store the couple of ingots you were really looking for.

Germination:
Keep very moist! Water the topsoil lightly twice each day for a couple weeks. If you can cover with plastic (as if in a planter box or pot) do this and only water when condensation disappears.

Soil:
I've grown successfully in planting mix bought from a garden store and - to my surprise - in freshly turned heavy clay soil in the dry California hills. I simply scattered seeds geurilla style before the fall rains and left them alone until harvest.

In my experience, these plants aren't delicate, they grow like weeds. Try the broadcast in freshly turned soil and neglect all season method.
