My first attempts

Ok so after reading another thread where there were some dodgy pictures, someone mentioned something about a macro mode on cameras. And i remembered that there was a button on my camera that had that same we pic and always wondered what it done. So i used it for close up shots and what a difference it makes.

My camera is an old outdated finepix a205s 2.0M camera and the picture quality is amazing so i thought id share.

This cupboard is completly dark, the flash worked a treat

anyway. On the l left is a 1/2 pint drinking glass with verm/brf. Only have 1 there as grinding brown rice with a pepper grinder killed my hands (have blisters will need to get a coffee grinder or go to the health shop. And to the right is the mycogrowbag.

The jar was ionoculated 2 days ago and the mycobag was inoculated a week and a half but still no signs yet. May have checked it far too much (everyday) have given it a couple shakes too.

They both smell fine so no contams. The jar es ecuador and the bag is koh samia.

Good luck with the grow, I'm sure you'll do fine. You certainly poured some blood, sweat and tears (mostly blood and sweat, from the sound of it) into your one cake, considering the pepper grinder. Man, that gave me a laugh. Coffee grinders can be found as cheap as $5-10!

except i dont live in america lol, things are a little more expensive, but i think theres a health store near me that should have brown rice flour, if not tesco sells rye flour which willd o the job.

Ill get a coffee grinder at some point, want to save the pennies and get an electric one, so a can grind drie shrooms into a powder.

Rye flour won't do the job unless you have a pressure cooker. Trust me. People use brown rice because rice doesn't contain bacterial endospores. You can't sterilize rye or wheat flour properly at boiling temperatures, you'll get a big smelly bacterial mess in your jars.

Maybe a mortar and pestle? Hehe.

Don't really mean to laugh at your expense Veda, but that was funny.  Good luck and I have to say, if you are at all serious about this you will have to break down and buy a pressure cooker so start saving those pennies now!

it says it has a pressure gauge, though does not say wot pressure it gets up to. Im sure most pressure cookers achieve 15 psi.

As soon as my wages come thru will get one.

I did get some brown rice flour, it was a little expensive, £1.95 for a 500g bag, but this should get me a good few batches.

Have a couple of questions.

1. In the teks, the quantities are given in ml for the verm and brf and water. But verm and bfr are not liquids, do i just use the the same scale on me measuring jug. i think this question may be a little stupid.

And i have just noticed that i have cups and pints marked on my jug, though they r uk measurments.

2. Im using half pint tumblers as canning jars just dont seem to exist at all in the uk. In one of the teks i read and a video, they used a peice of tinfoil folded over and snuggly fitted to the glass then another single layer of tinfoil over that. Will this be fine?? Thje douible layer of foil has the inoc holes in it, which dont get made until inoculating. and the single layer coveres the holes after inoc (will switch to micropore tape.

3. i have a balconing with some nice shelving, that i thought about puting cakes into to fruit, i think the material will let enough light thru for fruiting, but the temp may be too cold, just now its 60 F, but at night it could drop another to maybe as low as 40

The ratings in the UK seem to be given in KiloPascals.

~103 KiloPascals = 15psi

the grow bag is already sterlisised u just inoculate and leave it.

The jar, was a bit of a weird one, the brown rice i grinded now that i acutally have brown rice flour, isnt really brown rice flour. Its not ground fine enough.

I have mixed up 4 more batches using brf from the health store. Thanks for the heads up on the rye flour.

Im steam sterilising my first small batches till i get a pc which i can then start an lc.

I thought it looked a bit wet too. When i mixed the water with the verm and scooped some to reveal the bottom there seemed a little to much water so i drained it out till it looked like the video (pf tek for simple minds)

for my 4 jars i used these quantities from the second pf tek. Simple Cubensis Growing Technique.

I have 4 jars, 2 of them r 1/2 pints and the other 2 are slightly bigger.

so i decided to go with the quantities for 6 jars.
3 cups verm
1 1/2 cups brf
1 1/2 cups water

After mixing the verm with water it seemed a little wet so drained some of the water of, then added the brf and it made exactly enough for my 4 jars. It seemed a little wet as i was getting some clumps but continued to mix it, when putting in the jars i made sure that it wasnt clumpy and kept shaking the jars as i put the verm mix in to keep it airy.

The have just finished steam sterilising, so will wait till 2morrow. My other jar which is now at 3 days shows no signs of contams and smells fine.

we'll see wot happens.

So what happenes in the mix is a little too wet, i hear people saying a little too dry is better. Next time i will not add all the water until i mix and see how it turns out.

Im using a measuring jug that gives ml, fl. oz. , cups, pints, flour gr, suger grams. Bearing in mind this is UK measuring cups. Would i get more accurate measurements if i went out and bought some measuring cups??

Im in scotland. I guess its gonna take a few attempts before i get it right.

Just knocked up 4 jars, leaving them overnight too cool then inoculate when i get up.

Just realised that i had another jar, may mix up some for that jar and use less water this time and test the verm before adding brf. This will give me 3 slightly different mixs and some sort of comparison between each.

ok, they have cooled for almost 12 hours. Time to inoculate. 2 jars with the koh samia and 2 ecuador.



The 2 smaller glass's are ecuador and the 2 larger to the left of the smalls r koh samia and the large 1 furthest to left is ecuador
Im hoping my first pf tek starts to show signs, but after buying brf from teh health food shop, and comparing it to my ground brown rice i have doubts. a pepper grinder doesnt really make flour, more like minute brown rice rocks.

Well can only wait and see. Have verified that i doo indeed have spores in both my syringes ( i think they have loosened up much more now that they have been shaken a hell of a lot)

If by the end of the process i have a couple of grams dried, will be more than happy.

As each batch comes along im sure i will get better and better. When i get decent flushes i may move to casings.


Have just bought myself some measuring cups, the measuring jug just is not accurate enough for verm and flour.

ok, my growbag still has not done anything and its just over 2 weeks.

The first jar hasnt showed any signs yet (bad verm/brf mix?), and the other 4 (as espected) havnt done anything yet but they are at 3 days now.

they should have germinated, maybe your substrate was too wet.

Yup. Especially when you buy your sub pre-bagged. Ouch.

I wouldn't toss the grain bag out though; might as well keep it around until you smell something iffy. It might pick up, after all.

The slightly bigger 1 is just over 1/2 pint, the other smaller ones are exactly 1/2 pint, made a mistake in my last post, the most recent glasses were inoculated only 1 1/2 days ago.

The bag has been moved so i can just leave it alone.

Theres 1 jar thats been there for 4 days now.

Its all trial and error at this stage. I still have enough spores to start a liquid culture, so i dont have to get more syringes.

In the bag, i used 3cc as directed with the instructions, and with the jars i used between roughly 0.5cc per inoc hole (4 each jar) they liquid definatly made it into the substrate, i could see it go donw quite far.

Its still really early for a first attempt.

My temp sits around 80 F sometimes droping to around 79 F and a max of 82 F

Only time will tell. I have some measuring cups on the way so i can get the mixture exact.

It's possible that i may have a contaminated syringe? although my jar thats been going for 4/5 days still smells fine and no signs of contams.

oh well its just a case of wait n see, my mixtures may not be optimum and there just taking there time.

At this stage, if 1 grows and devolops i will be happy.

This is totaly new to me although i have read a ton of information its still down to experience and personaly practicality, some people catch on faster than others.
