What is "casing"?
I hear this term, but I'm rather new. What does it involve?

If you want to know what casing is or what this method is try looking under the grow/find method. It sometimes helps. =)

How is it that you read TONs and TONs of Teks and have not managed to find out what a casing is? Perhaps I might suggest Tons and Tons MORE (on your relative scale) reading first. The brown rice must me mixed with vermiculite or some suitable replacment (of which I know none) which will provide an aerated mixture. An ultrasonic humidifier and the use of perlite should be all the humidity one needs...misting would be optional. Fanning would be necessary during the fruiting cycle. On the topic of your jars: Two syringes over 30 jars ,ight be a little thin! That is not to say that it can't be done, it can...BUT you might find it more sucessful to spread those syrings over half as may jars. By doing this you will be able to inroduce more spores per volume. Thus, speeding up your colonization. This will be helpful in reducing your chances of contamination, increasing the chaces of your first time sucess, etc...With the fruits you will get, you will be able to make more spore syringes that you will ever need. Then, repeat the process. 30 jars might be a lot to take care of your first time...DON'T get your substrate too wet. Your rice flour and vermiculite mixture should have just enough water to be moist and crumbly NOT clumpy and sticky...Good luck!

A note on "casing".
I had heard the term used before, but it sounded like people were referring to something other than what I thought was just reffered to as substrate..

I'm fairly new myself, but I can explain what casing is--I know everyone who replied seemed to know, but no one was giving an answer. Casing is merely a layer of vermiculate placed over and under your fully colonized substrate. If your growing straight from the PF cakes, which I suggest (as does PF), you just place a small amount of wet vermiculite in a dish, place the cake on top of that, then another layer of wet vermiculite on top of the cake--the PF site will explain everything about this in better detail (I think they call it the PF double-ended casing tek or something to that affect). As for the using an oven to innoculate your jars, I think you're confused. As I remember the open oven tek is used for spore printing and the such, as that is when you most need a sterile enviroment, not for innoculating--though it's a good idea to have a clean work space for innoculating, just to be safe. *Go ask Alice...*
