You guys will love this one. Check out:
THE LAST WAVE directed by Peter Weir and starring Richard Chamberlain
(circa 1980?)
Nope. Its not a surfing movie. Its a supernatural thriller where Chamberlain defends two Aborigines accused of killing another Aborigine. The victim was killed by a shamanic chief using a "death bone".
Chamberlain gets pulled into their dreamtime and experiences lucid dreaming and signs of the upcoming prophecy - it rains mud and frogs, etc.
Very erie with a good music soundtrack.
A second pick would be:
PHASE IV - science fiction from the late '70s.
In this one, ants mutate and show signs of becomming intelligent as researchers attempt to communicate. Not cheesy like it sounds - very well done. Ant photography is worthy of National Geographic. Great storyline, mediocre acting. It has a wild surprise ending!
These two are somewhat obscure and may be hard to locate.

I would have to say Cube is greatest. It can be pretty scary while tripping, but I loved it.

Anything by John Cassavetes. Particularly "The killing of a chinese bookie" or "Faces". No fuzzy lights bullshit, just "the truth at 24 frames a second". Recomended for anyone interested in heavier stuff than just seeing funny colours.

A Clockwork Orange, it's probably more "weird" than " trippy", but great if you're in an altered state none the less. It has a lot to do with the music in the film.

Just saw "Wakeing Life" it deffintly is at the top of list at the moment "Rocky Horror Picture Show" but only if at a midnight showing theater just sitting in your liveingroom and watching it while tripping its funny but tripping in the theater with a good permanate cast doing the show in front of the screen and the audiance pertisipation makes it a event not to be missed. and lastly Spauding Grey's "Swimming to Cambodia" or "Monster in the Box"

For myself and maybe a few others:
Between Time and Timbuktu, which was aired on PBS in the 70's. It's based on the book by Vonnegut which is actually a "best of Vonnegut".
This work is based on materials by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Stony Stevenson wins first prize in a space poetry competition and trains to become an astronaut. Newscasters track his progress as he travels through space and time in the Prometheus Five space ship. Mission control loses track of his movements, and he finds himself wandering from one bizarre situation to another. Elements of various Kurt Vonnegut stories are incorporated, and Stony finds himself on the island of San Lorenzo with the outlawed spiritual leader Bokonon, in a bizarre totalitarian courtroom, in a laboratory where the "Ice Nine" formula is being created, in a society where everyone's talents are equalized by government-imposed "handicaps," and in a suicide assistance "parlor." Finally, Stony meets a young girl on a fire engine, and she tells him he is in heaven. The parade that ensues is interrupted by the appearance of an Adolf Hitler figure who is supposed to represent death. He and Stony face off in a match that Stony pegs as "death against imagination" with Stony as the victor. In the final scene of the work, Stony finds himself back at his own grave on earth, where he is told that his space ship arrived at its destination, but his body was never found. Vonnegut's works were adapted for television by Fred Barzyk, David Loxton, and David Odell. David Atwood provided special effects, some of which appear to have used the Paik-Abe videosynthesizer.
A very intense movie, a definite blast, I would imagine, to watch tripping.
Only the older folks here may remember it. I've heard it was available in a few public libraries in NYC,but I've yet to track it down.
