Psilocybe silvatica
    #6071588 - 09/17/06 06:26 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

I live in Canada and i always happen to find what i believe is Psilocybe silvatica. Well i stoped seeing them around now i guess the season is over. But i think i gonna try to pick some next time. I would really like to know if there is any lookalike for this mushroom. They look just like this :

Of course when i get some il ask for ID. But i don't think it will be necessary if there is no lookalikes.

Also anyone know a common name used for these mushrooms?

There's probably about 1000 species, literally, that look like that.

If it has a purple-brown/purple spore print, and a seperable pellicle and the stem is kind of braided looking, and the mushroom looks just like the picture, then it is P. silvatica. No lookalikes will have all those characteristics.

If you can get some pictures, that would be interesting. I've not seen any posts of P. silvatica that I can remember. I have found a couple before, but they are a very rare find for me. Later.

Yeah well i live in Canada ON , i am quite sure that removes a lot of mushrooms that don't grow in this region after all , at the mushroom hunting locations this mushroom is mentioned, also i find them in grassy places just like the mushroom hunting guide say for these mushrooms.

And yes ones the season is back which is unfortunately not soon i will definitely make some pix i got a nice camera u can ID easy id think.

That picture you posted IS of P. silvatica. BUT as you mentioned, that doesn't mean what you found is P. silvatica, since the picture you used was found from the web.

Later.

I thought they were said to grow on wood debris, not grassy areas.

They are common by the tens of thousands in alder wood clear cuts int eh PNW mostly. They slightly macroscopically resemble liberty caps and some mycena species and some Concoybe species, In the clearcuts they are surround by Namaetoloma's Galerinas and aluria arantia (carrot cups). They are int he dusted woodchips, branches and growiing along the undersides of logs and in areas where alder grow form 2 to ten feet, usually in a 3-year period until the nutrients are used up after a burn off.

many clear cuts also spray strange chemicals into many clearcuts. We @cro and I have seen helicopters dumping liquids into the clear cuts in Kingston, Washington and als seen signs warning of toxic chemicals inteh clear cuts at certaintimes of the year. Even Roadkill, his son and I have seen these while out there it he clearcuts.

IF youhit the right P. pelliculosa patch, yo will also collect P. silvatica at those locations.

One last point. The mushroom website of Michael Beug of Evergreen State college has a bad photo of an unidentified shrooom listed as p. silvatica and it is not. I talked to him about it but the kid who built the site for Michael no longer lives in the state and Michael does not known how to remove the image or even log into the sites cpanel or stp.
You can view both P. pelliculosa and P. silvatica at

http://www.mushroomjohn.com/psilocybepelliculosa1.htm

and P. silvatica at:
http://www.mushroomjohn.com/psilocybesilvatica1.htm

And both can grow to the edge of a clearcut and appear in grassy areas where seeded grass grew into the adjoining mulch. But those are rare. Several years ago a small patch of P. pelliculosa appeared on North Aurora avenue.

Because at the end of every page is a list of related threads which are similar to those recently posted./ Newer members do not known so they open them with a new question or respond with a new answer. I did not even notice it was old i till I jut read your post.
