A short essay about karma

Some view karma as reward or punishment from an external agent: dishonor the gods and they will sink your ship. I believe this is a shallow view, imposing inappropriate Western paradigms. (These myths hold great value, because their true meaning goes far deeper than this).

Many believe karma is delivered by others: lie, cheat and steal enough, and eventually it will come back to you. Sometimes this is generic, other times there are weird ironic synchronicities that reflect your original action. Though I do see karma at work in this form, I think there is something more.

To me, the deepest meaning of karma is that we create our own reality. I freely admit, I often feel anger at those who are exploiting this world with seemingly no retribution (*cough* Cheney *cough* :smile: ). But in moments of greater clarity, I see that they are living lives filled with anger, greed, devotion to false and illusory goals, and finally, fear. Closing off to the boundless love and mystery that this life offers is truly greater punishment than any Man could dole out. A theistic religion might call this "the absence of God's love."

To be born, live, and die, never grasping the incredible opportunity offered -- that is karma.
