So, I finally got around to write this up to go with my friends pictures
25th May. inoculated ? litre of finch seed, in 1 litre jar. Birdseed PC?d for 1 hour. Tyvek filter on lid, hole size of a penny in lid. inoculation multispore, syringe made from Amazonian print obtained from www.mushmush.nl.
9th June. Jar of birdseed fully colonised for a few days. Filled large oven bag (turkey size with holes punched in) with chopped wheat straw. Brought large pan of water to 170F. Lowered bag of straw into water, keeping top open (allows water into bag). Once bag full of water, bag closed with rubber band. Small brick placed on bag to submerge. Water brought up to 170F and timer started for 1 hour. Straw hung to drain (water kept for future use). Straw cool, wipe rubbermaid container with alcohol (size approx 16" x 14" x 11" deep). Thin layer of straw put into container followed by some colonised birdseed, followed by thin layer of straw, then birdseed, etc until layer approx 5". Straw covered with plastic food film, holes punched, edges tucked around straw. Lid put onto container and left at room temperature to colonise.
16th June Fully colonised straw:

To this a layer of cococoir and 30% vermiculite were added to a depth of roughly ?inch. A homemade lid is now put on, and covered with newspaper (to keep it dark):

21st June. Some surface colonisation:

24th June Fully colonised suface:

The newspaper is now removed, and fanning takes place twice a day.
3rd July.
4 days after pins appeared:

As you can see, minimal materials are required. No terranium, no humidity gauge etc. Just an oven bag, a jar of colonised grain, a rubbermaid, some straw and casing material. The container is kept with the homemade lid on throughout fruiting, at room temperature (roughly 70F).
Good luck

How come you allowed the casing surface to colonize so much?
just curious

Thats looking very promising. I think a friend whom I don?t know is going to try this TEK in a few weeks with Tazmanian strain. I hope their results resemble yours

In reply to:

I would guess you could spawn the straw with a PF cake broken into small pieces with similar results.
In reply to:

As you can see when the myc has broken through the casing (24 June), this is perfect. Ryzomorphs have broken through the surface all over. In the later fruiting pics, you can see the myc. has started to colonise the coir further. This seems to be a problem with coir, the myc. seems to like it a bit too much! The ideal casing layer is 50/50 for this project, but coir is easier, and less work.
Good luck

excellent log dreamatrix! una?s amazonian is an excellent strain, big and meaty, but it needs a cold shock to fruit properly... i?ve found it few weeks ago with my first tries with this strain...for me not a summer strain...does better in winter

Excellent log Dream.......those look fantastic! Can?t wait to see end results! can straw be used only with grain and seed based substrate? .........You can use BRF/PF cakes to colonize straw! Works almost as well.
