Hey everyone, first off, I broke my camera by setting it on the ground near my computer so the USB cord could connect properly, and in getting up and sitting down smashed it with a leg of my computer chair!! DOH! So anyways, I wanted to give you an outline on my method of preparing a mixture of dung and straw and my outcomes. Its a fairly easy way w/o using very much money you can really get some good results...No good pics...I?m sorry! (I?m copying Club?s outline for his procedure... Strain: Cambodian from The Little Guy Substrate: 50% wheat straw, 50% dehydrated natural cow patties, and for a boost: A small amount of brown rice flour. Spawn: 2 pints colonized birdseed Casing: Straight pasteurized coir. Extras: 18 gallon Rubbermaid "Roughneck" carry-all container, Polyfill (or filters).
Procedure: Preparation of Bulk Substrate: 5-6 dried cow patties were chosen, crumbled, and added into a pillowcase made of about a 50-50 ratio of wheat straw and dung. Pasteurized in a large pot of water on the stove for 1hour and 15 minutes. No roast or candy thermometer were used. Just kept it hot enough, but not to boiling. Drained outside on the lawn 36 hours, and loaded into the 18-gal container. 2 pints birdseed was then added into the mixed dung. A ? inch layer of dung was lightly added over the straw. The mix was then lightly compacted to about 3 inches high. Spawn Running: Two holes approximately 2 inches in diameter were cut on the sides of the container and filled with Polyfill. The container was just placed in a corner of a room with a blanket wrapped around it. Temperature was only about 68-74 degrees F. This was then left alone and very lightly misted every 4 days or so to maintain moisture content. (These were taken just days before the death of my camera:
Obviously, the substrate was nowhere near to be put into fruiting. The substrate colonized 100% in about 10 days. Pinhead Initiation/Fruiting: Once everything was colonized, it was let to sit a few days to make sure it was strongly colonized before casing. Within a day or two, pinheads had grown to about 1 cm in length. A hole on the top of the container was cut and covered with plastic wrap and placed under a fluorescent light for 18 hours. Fanning only took place 2-5 times per day. The container was not cased, yet there was abundant pinning. Misting was needed every day to keep the substrate to its optimum water capacity. I really think this had a lot to do with the large yield. The pins got healthy and started growing for the sky. Within a few days, most had reached the height of 8-12 inches. Would of be great to have pictures of this, nor do I have a scale, but I would imagine the total yield of the first flush being at around 3-5 ounces dry. Most were about this size, except the true beauty of the Cambodian really did show through.
A light layer of casing was then used for the second flush. The second flush is still forming but there actually seems to be many pins popping up every few hours! Harvesting/Drying: After the pickings, they were laid to rest on a big, stationary fan pointed upwards for about 36 hours and then placed in a drying chamber of dri-rite and a wire mesh until cracker dry.
