too much protein?
    #7182801 -

quick question for anyone taking protein and working out.

A lot of places recommend at least 1 Gram of protein per pound of body weight. I'm 6 foot tall and weigh only 140 and have been toning up over the last year. Is it possible that taking more than enough of whey protein can cause any adverse reactions or side effects?
Currently I'm taking 3 grams of creatine monohydrate in the morning before a work out and also drinking 3 shakes aday, each containg two scoops (40 grams) of protein powder. Adding that to all of my daily meals im sure that im exceeding that dosage advice.

penny for your thoughts gov'nor

The only adverse effect is that after your body consumes all that it can protein is then stored as fat. Most bodybuilding magazines will tell you to get 1-1.5 grams per lbs of body weight. Protein is most important immediately after a workout. I have a shake (2 scoops) in the morning with breakfast, after my workout, and right before bed. Your protein intake should be split between meals and shakes. You can take up to 15grams of creatine a day before you start pissing it out. Also it's good to have a 1 scoop shake 15-20 minutes preworkout with some creatine.

EDIT:
Also, make sure you take the creatine with protein because it will absorb better and creatine helps with protein synthesis so this is very important. If you weigh 140lbs you should get 140 grams of protein, even up to 280. The more the better, unless you start seeing you are softening up.. 2g/lbs is the most I've seen recommended and I wouldn't go that high unless you are on some juice. 1-1.5g/lbs is standard.

I just add the creatine , little under a tablespoon, into my first protein shake of the day. and then eat breakfast along with a multivitamin that supposedly helps protein synthesis. Thanks for the input.
On the subject of creatine, since i skipped the loading phase should i aim for using creatine every day or every other? Ive heard mixed things on the bodybuilding.com site.
I'm not trying to gain a phenomenal amount of mass, just a modest tone. With relatively heavy lifting for my frame.
The directions say 5 grams servings on the creatine mono bottle, so i tuned it down to 3 considering my goals and my weight. Also because the last attempt at using creatine( cheap Weider capsules from wal mart) led to an increase in acne that i assumed was the creatines fault.

If you haven't been taking it long then I would suggest you go ahead and load.. 5 grams like 4 times a day or so for 4-5 days. If you've already been taking it awhile though it's already in your system and you can just keep taking it. I would suggest taking it everyday. You want a consistent amount in your body. Creatine really shouldn't cause acne to be honest. It mostly just puts water into your muscles helping to transport nutrients and synthesize protein. The best deal on the internet when it comes to creatine or protein is at advantagesupplements.com, Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey and their Creatine Monohydrate are the best bang for your buck. Bodybuilding.com is a great resource for information as well.

do tell what's "today's" creatine? Creatine Monohydrate Powder? Or the creatine mix that is in Universal's Animal Pump, the creatine in No-Xplode, or a serum?

If you are taking creatine monohydrate powder, then yes load it.

Don't listen to someone who doesn't even know the difference between.

What is today's creatine?
I'd really like to know this...

Yeah, it's all gonna depend on what you get as to whether or not you're suppose to load.

For instance, CEE doesn't require a loading phase while monohydrate does.

well i was talking to a friend of mine studying biochemistry and he told me that the "loading phase" (excess intake of creatine for a week)
did not produce measureably better results than just having 3-5g a day with your morning/post workout shake.

as he told me, you'd simply piss out the excess with is supposed to do the "loading" - in contrary of the common believe that it gets stored.

i actually believed him.

Right now the train of thought is that a loading phase isn't required. Too much creatine will just be sent out of the body as creatinine. Let your body "load" it's store naturally, which it will do after a few days. Creatine concentrations will remain stable at 3-5g ed after a month.

I personally think magnesium creatine chelate and dicreatine malate are some of the best creatines out there. But creatine monohydrate is tried, tested and true. I'm actually thinking about switching back to it after a year of using other creatine products.

The only problem I've encountered with standard creatine monohydrate products would be adema (bloating). This can be remedied by taking it post workout, while insulin is naturally spiked and your muscles are absorbent to nutrients like a sponge. Local IGF-1, other insulin like growth factors, insulin, androgen receptors and other tissues are sensitized from training and creatine will be driven into your system with more efficiency and less chance of being broken into by-products like creatinine.

I also don't believe that an artificial insulin spike from high glycemic carbs are necessary for creatine uptake. I think it's bad for insulin sensitivity, and though it works, just take it post workout where it'll be absorbed better without the random/fake insulin spike induced from sugar.

Creatine is good shit. Anabolic androgenic steroid users take creatine during their cycle because of it's undisputed effectiveness. Loading is just a waste, imho. It does nothing but bloat you slightly and put a tiny bit of stress on the liver. No more stress than eating something I would imagine, but still...

(sorry for kidnapping the thread ..)

I've only tried creatine monohydrate. Personally I can't say it does a whole lot for me that good eating can't surpass.

Ive done creatine many times and it usually worked really well. But with plenty (with plenty I mean a lot) of eating I got the same results...

well creatine does naturally occur in meat, so that makes pretty good sense to me

Shit dude, thats alot of protein powder. Try and get more from chicken, tuna, whatever. Also creatine is a lot of hype. I took it for a few days, did notice a small change, but I think I was able to basically understand how it affected me when I was working out and been able to achieve some of the benefits of it without using it anymore. Either that or I'm full of shit, but does it really make a difference?

t-nation.com best training site. Peace :mushroom2:

Creatine is cheap enough and heavily researched. Nothing has been more researched than creatine and caffeine, so I say give it a shot.

While the muscular strength and endurance are minute with creatine mono, it's for real. And it's not something diet can replace unless you're eating lots of lean cuts. And even if you are eating lean cuts of meat, it STILL helps to restore ATP and increase peak muscular contractions so I say even a roid user can benefit from it (and they do).

well I'm a week or so in, and i swear im already feeling increased endurance. I'm on a pyramid work out routine where the reps build from 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 etc.
Ive been on it since i started the protein and have noticed some definite but slow gains. This last week, however, Ive been climbing up with ease. The next day I'm feeling great and ready for some more pumps!

Thanks for all the helpful responses
