Protein Bars That Aren't Sweet?
    #18507581 -

Does anybody know of a protein brand that isn't sweet? I personally abhor sweet tastes, I know it's weird, but I've always been this way since I was a kid. I hate chocolate, cake, donuts, and all of that shit. I hate how all the protein bars taste like chocolate or caramel or vanilla, and was wondering if anybody knew of a brand that doesn't try to give their bars a sweet taste.

Have you tried meat?

Personally, IDK of any. You could always make your own and then you'd be in control of how they taste (not to mention it'd be easier on your wallet). I would think something like this wouldn't be too sweet:

If you didn't know, adding in cocoa powder will cut through the sweetness of the protein powder.

the granola bar ones with nuts aren't too bad, still a bit sweet but more salty imo.  nature valley makes them.

What about a dollop of low sugar natural peanut butter? PB always makes my tummy hurt and then sometimes I get the poops. I'm not trying to wish the poops on you or anything but maybe your digestive system works differently than mine.

You're right! I like nature valley protein bars a lot actually. They tend to be cheaper than the brand I currently have too.

There's not really any protein in peanut butter though, at least not a complete protein. The purpose of protein bars in my diet is so I can just grab something in the morning before work that contains at least 30g of protein, without me having to cook some eggs or something.

oh man.  throwing three eggs in a small frying pan takes like 90 seconds.  i cook them while i tie my tie.  eat in 60 seconds and i'm out the door.  the pan stays clean and i have a small plate and a fork to wash when i get home.

eggs FTW

Make your own. Granola bars are 200kcal and 10g of protein from incomplete sources.

Bring some turkey with you. Muscle Max 220kcal 25g protein (whey) are sold at like every connivence store in the world.

Oatmeal + Peanut butter.... make your own protein bar (with complete protein and plenty of good fat for energy)

That's a lot of calories and not much protein.

32g of peanut butter, about 2 table spoons = 200kcalories and 8g of protein. Make a protein bar with oats and peanut butter and you're talking about around 500kcal for 15-20g of protein

OP just eat the sugar.

KIND bars are pretty good. The package is see through, not sure how sweet they are tho. I love em but then again I like sugar.

Ives been wondering the same thing only sweetness isn't as much of the problem for me as the sugar. I guess power bars work but it would be nice if there was something that wasn't loaded with so much sugar sugar.

Lara bars are made with pretty much all whole food ingredients, and are very good.

Dates and coconut/seeds/nuts seems to be the primary ingredients. Very good, very convenient, but also very small and expensive (although i just picked some up from costco)

There are LOTS of recipes for this kind of thing online.

I would probably try to make them spicy if I created my own.

My ex always thought it was so weird, that I put hot sauce and peppers and spices in my oatmeal in the morning. But the way I see it, it's a grain, just like rice or barley. I find it better to be enjoyed that way than with sugar and syrup or whatever.

Both lar bars and kind pars have like 9g-12g of incomplete protein per 200kcal. These are not "protein bars" but are delicious snacks.

I have no suggestions besides make your own but I can provide this...

Protein bars are sweet for two reasons:

#1: Palatability (taste)

#2: Digesting sugars increases your insulin levels which in turn better enables your body to absorb proteins

:cookiemonster: It's fucking science

Just bumping this thread to suggest dehydrating meat. That may be a way to get spicy protein on the go (since you can add whatever spices you want to the meat before dehydrating it). It's way cheaper than buying jerky, and you get the benefit of complete proteins.

hardboiled ftw..  I like to have a bag of cooked and peeled ones ready for the road.  Next road trip I'm bringing a few gallons of pickled eggs. muahahah

The healthfood store might have some carob protein bars.  I would also make my own and stay away from all the random weird shit they put in the store bought ones.

Alton Brown has a good episode on the subject
Good Eats - S09E05P02 - Power Trip

just a clip, might have to torrent it for the video.
