Protein intake after working out?
    #3363504 - 11/15/04 12:54 PM (12 years, 22 days ago)

I've never been sure of how much protein you should take after working out. Should I eat meats and all that right after working out or later in the night, and how many grams is enough for rebuilding muscle. Also on the next day when I rest should I be eating lots of protein too?

For building muscle, try to get AT LEAST 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight. If you weigh 180lbs, then you need to eat at least 360 grams of protein per day.

For breakfast:
2-3 boiled eggs (yolks are important also-provides sulfur which is also used to build muscle)
2 pieces turkey bacon
1-2 pieces of whole wheat bread
Drink 2 glasses of water

For Lunch:
Chicken/Tuna salad sandwich (whole wheat)
Carrot sticks
Yogurt/some type of fruit
Water

For dinner:
Salad
Chicken/Fish/Beef
Small potato/Whole wheat bread/whole wheat pasta

Right after I work out, I eat a banana and some chicken. The banana replenishes the muscles glucose supplies and the chicken helps provide protein. I also eat a lot of fish (sardines, yum!) Also be sure to get the right amount of complex carbs in your diet. WHOLE GRAIN NOT WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And plenty of veggies. I'm not a certified nutritionist, but I've done my research. Protein also comes in beans, but it is not complete. You need to pair it with whole grains (wheat, rice, STONE GROUND corn) for the complete set of essential amino acids. The majority of my protein comes from fish, chicken, and wild game.

It is my understanding that the human body can only process 40 grams of protein in a 2 hour time period so by default anything more than 40 grams would get excreated and/or peed away. A diet too high in protein puts a lot of strain on the kidneys, something to do with the creation of ureaic(?) acid i think

I weight about 150-155. But 300g of protein a day seems like over kill. I usually eat a can of tuna after working out(about 40g of protein) and sometimes I'll make a shake using protein powder(I'm guessing with the half litre of milk it's about 60g protein). Could you give me a link that talks about 2g of protein per lb of body weight.

I could try and get more turkey and chicken into my diet, but I dont like eggs other than the yolk.

Freak: where did you hear about the body only being able to use 40g of protein in a 2 hour period??

Also, does anyone know if eating lots of protein on a resting day will help?

I heard that from BF6 who used to work as a personal trainer. I talked briefly with him about the most effetive way to take creatine and the guy really knows his stuff

Utilizing higher than average quantities of protein on non workout days appears to help the muscles repair themselves in preparation for the following workout

I don't know if you are aware of this but there are miniscule tears/lesions in the muscle tissue after a good workout, hence the reason why people only work the same muscle group(ing) after letting it rest and heal for at least 24 hours...

You want a fast absorbing protein such as Whey protein right after your workout (and you can find many whey protein shakes - buy online, its much cheaper) as opposed to a slow absorbing such as casein protein found most commonly in dairy products (milk, cottage cheese, etc.) which you should take before you go to bed since it will absorb all while your sleeping. You really only should be taking the protein shake after a workout, and maybe in the morning with breakfast if you can't get a source of protein in, but real food is the best source of protein.

Also, you should be eating about 1 - 1.5 grams of protein per weight in pounds.

^^^^This is why i advised against mixing whey protein with milk and recomended water

Also, you should be eating about 1 - 1.5 grams of protein per weight in pounds.

^^^ I think this is a more accurate assment of how many grams of protein you need rather than the 2 grams per pound of body weight that someone else suggested earlier

I've got to agree with theocean06 on this one.  I usually try for about 1 gm/lb body weight.  Protein shakes are a wonderful supplement, which is exactly the point..they are only a supplement.  At most drink two shakes a day, one in the morning and one no later than 30 mins after your workout.  All other protein should come from food.  For optimal bulk, you should probably be eating at regular intervals all day.  If you are looking at getting into creatine, do yourself a favor and don't buy anything unless it clearly says "pharmaceutical grade."  In my experiences generic creatine (ex. GNC) won't do you much good.  However, everyone reacts differently to workout supplements.  As for your off days, I'd keep up with the protein and definitely take the creatine.  Good luck, don't slack, and get ripped!

Thanks for the replies. Ya the powder I use is whey protein, I just wasn't too sure about optimal times to get it in me.

I used to workout a good 4 times per week and made lots of gains, but that was over a year ago. I've been worked out half assed for almost a year now, but I've decided I'm going to start back up.

I don't know where you buy your whey from man but i order from some place in the K & W area and it's only $39.95 for 5 pounds or prolab, perhaps not the GR8est quality whey protein but if you're on a tight budget it may be worth checking out

Their creatine is pretty cheap as well( $24.95 for 600 grams i think), and they deliver the next day....

I also order from sndcanada.com. It's the cheapest Canadian supplement site I've found. Shipping is very reasonable too, only a $5 flat rate.

Make sure you don't eat too much protein at one time. Like Freak said there's around a 40g limit of protein that your body can process at one time. Any more than that will turn to fat. I learned this the hard way when I first started bulking. It was just more fat I had to lose when it came time to cut. Also for the most efficient bulking and protein intake, try to eat 6-7 times a day rather than cram a lot of food into 3 meals.

Thanks freaq

Max: So if I eat protein hours before I workout will it still help later on?

Hey man, i fully realize you were directing that question to Max and i apologise if i am interupting. Try and keep your Creatine and protein ingestion a couple of hours apart as apparently they vie for receptor sites or some such shit and virtually negate each other: Remember(and this goes against common knowledge) Creatine B4 you workout and Protein after

If you can score some dextrose to mix your creatine with that's a bonus as it GR8ly assists with it's assimilation(the creatine). I have found that my local IDA drug store carries pure dextrose at a very cheap price(under 3 bucks)
