List of high protein foods

The chart for high protein foods lists good quality protein food sources and protein content for an average serving.

Eating a little high protein food at each meal helps reduce the appetite plus the body uses energy to convert protein to carbohydrates, a process known as Gluconeogenesis.

Protein can be converted to fat (indirectly) and stored just like carbs however protein contains Nitrogen, an important chemical essential for the production of antibodies. The body prefers to hold onto Nitrogen thus protein is more likely to be converted to carbs rather than fat. These complex chemical reactions use up extra energy and help us burn more calories at rest!

Weight loss progress often stops due to a lowered metabolism. Increase metabolism before cutting calories and very low calorie or high protein diets wont be necessary!

Notice that the list of high protein foods contain those from animal origin as these are the best sources for high quality protein. Foods of plant origin tend to have a lower biological value and therefore different sources must be combined to gain a complete protein source.

The amount of fat contained in each food has not been listed because this amount depends on the type of product purchased and how the product is cooked, for example buying the leanest cuts of meat will have a low fat content but frying any product in oil will add to the fat content!

Be aware that most processed sources of meat and meat products contain high amounts of sodium in the form of salt, mainly used for preservation and to enhance taste. High levels of salt in the diet is not recommended as too much may cause water retention and contribute partly to weight gain. You must also be aware that some meat products contain high levels of fats, protein and carbohydrates which means increased calorie intake. Dieters should try to reduce consumption of animal products when trying to lose weight. Learn how we burn fat with anaerobic exercise.
