Need some help with my car, won't start *FIXED*

I was working on my new house all day and went to pick up something from the store. Came back and stayed for about 2-3 hours.

Came out to my car to goto my friends and it won't start, and won't even turn over. I checked all the fuses and tried to jump it and nothing. Not a click nada thing.

I think it is the starter but I just had it replaced about 5 months ago... I am considering changing out the starter myself before I go into work. I found this guide.

Got a Nissan altima GXE 1995

I got a place that sells the starters for about 200 and then I get a $60 return core fee.

I don't know much about cars do you think I will be able to do this?

Starter/Celinoid probably. That looks like a pretty good guide, but make sure it's not something obvious first. Is that shit in gear? Do you live in cold weather? Nissans are notorious for hard starting in cold weather.

Assure the car is fully engaged in Park. My sister had a problem where her shifter would end up bumping into the edge of her coffee cup & even though it was 'clicked' into Park, the sensor wasn't making contact ---- So her car wouldn't start :wink:

Doubtful it'll be that easy, but who knows?!

As for changing the starter, it should just be a couple of mounting bolts & unplugging the wiring harness(es) and putting together in reverse. GOOD LUCK!

Maybe the alternator went before and you just cant start it now

Warm east cost weather

Automatic, but tried it in neutral just for kicks

This happened about 5 months ago and it was the starter. Was charged out the A at about 1,000 to get it fixed.

I figure how hard can it be and if all else fails I can always return the part...

Any over all suggestions or tips though?

I don't think it is the alternator since I hear no signs of the starter and it will not turn over.

Plus I had a jump and it did nothing.

Also all the lights inside and out are functionally without restriction...

go to AutoZone or whatever,and get a full Charging system diagnostic.

It'll tell you if you alternator,battery,and maybe a few other things are in good order.


it's free,and will probably lead you to your problem.

problem is, they need it running, so if you know any ol' timer rednecks that can rig it to run for a while, then this is possible..otherwise, take the alt. ,and battery to the place and they can do it seperatly as well.


Sounds like a Charging/electronic issue.

I have an advanced auto down the street from my house, I wonder if I bring in the starter can they tell me if it is faulty

Ok I called a friend who didn't speak long since he was busy a work but he said it is one of two things for sure.

1) Starter

2) Neutral safety switch

Now who or what is a bad neutral safety switch?

The neutral safety switch is a switch that tells your car's ECU whether it is in neutral, park, etc.. If it is not in park or neutral than your car will not start up.

I would also recommend checking your battery terminals, make sure they are connected and tight, and that the negative cable is bolted in place to the chassis/engine/where ever it is secured off the battery. If this comes loose than your car may not start as well.

Where are you located, by chance? I am pretty good with cars and am familiar with Nissans and the engine you have in particular (I have owned several cars with the same motor).

I am guessing this is a starter issue also, seeing as how you're not getting a click but your electrical system and battery seem to be in order. This wouldn't be an alternator problem as the alternator keeps your battery charged and power to the engine, while the engine is operating. It doesn't do anything if it isn't spinning. Normally starters will just die with no warning or indication, they either work or they don't, there is no in between. You can try tapping it and the solenoid on the starter with a hammer a few times to see if it is stuck, sometimes the starter gear can sieze in place and prevent it from cranking the engine. This doesn't normally work on newer starters however, but it is worth a shot. While you're down there verifying that all the wires are connected to the starter properly would help also.

Also, one last thing you can check is the brake pedal position switch. If that is not working (since with an auto you have to depress the brake pedal to start the car), your car will not start. The switch itself is on the brake pedal, further up than where you put your foot up under the dash.

Ok here is what I did

Went to advanced auto and got a new starter.

Went to my car, tried to start it, nope, so I jacked it up.

Pooped the hood and disconnected the neg terminal

Went under the car and found the starter.....It was way to hard for me to get to it so I thought I wait and call AA and have them tow it to my friends garage.

My g/f came out and said did you want to listen to that guy on your mushroom site? (script) So I said yes.

I couldn't really get a good angle on it so I taped all that I could reach and then put the negative back on.

For shits and giggles I decided to start the car. YES!!!! It started with no hesitation or sputter!

So this is where I am at, I am going to wait till my friend comes back to see if it is anything major but I think that I should be fine.

I will give :mushroom2: 5+ to everyone who helped thanks all! :smile:
