HI, I'm from the US and I hope this will close this ridiculous gap in our relations (especially amongst us drug connisours) between the US and Canada. I admit I've been ignorant and ridiculous about how I feel about Canada. You're a wonderful wellspring of knowledge and science.
The Prime minister of Canada has recently stated that a bill will be passed that effectively decriminalizes the simple possession of Marijuana. There will be a fine for possession of one to fifteen grams of pot and a fine or arrest at the police officer?s discretion for an amount in the range of fifteen to thirty grams. The fine will range from 100 dollars as a youth to one hundred and fifty dollars as an adult under normal circumstances. Other circumstances, such as possession while driving or near or on school grounds will result in an increased fine of 350 to 400 dollars. This same law will be in place for the possession of Hash or Marijuana resin, the possession limit will be up to and including one gram.
With its new marijuana bill introduced in the House of Commons, the government is adding 245 million dollars over five years for drug enforcement, education and treatment. But the same bill includes tougher penalties for illegally growing and trafficking pot. Justice Minister Martin Cauchon says the new bill makes it clear that marijuana use is still illegal, but possession of small amounts will no longer make you a criminal.
The reception of this bill in the United States didn?t go over so well. The Bush Administration threatened to go against many parts of the NAFTA agreement and claimed that trade at the America-Canada border would slow significantly. This is a dark threat, although it doesn?t come as a surprise since they have been breaking many rules of the NAFTA since its being signed.
A Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reporter asked David Murray, assistant to White House drug czar John Walters, what he thought of all this. ''We would have to respond. We would be forced to respond,'' Murray said. The Bush administration has blown a hole a mile wide in US-Canadian relations. A few weeks ago, Ambassador Paul Cellucci chided Canada for not joining the ''coalition of the willing,'' which apparently doesn't mean exactly what its name implies.
Cellucci told the Economic Club of Toronto that many Americans were ''disappointed and upset'' that Canada was not supporting the Bush-Rumsfeld improvement program for Iraq. The reaction in Canada was swift and sure. ''Yours is the only country that has ever invaded ours, and it would do so again in a wink if it thought its interests here were seriously threatened,'' stated Halifax Chronicle-Herald columnist Donald Cameron. ''We need no lectures from Americans about the defense of liberty and democracy.'' Shortly after Cellucci's tirade, President George Bush canceled a state visit to Ottawa. The next day Bush invited Prime Minister John Howard of Australia for a sleepover at the Crawford, Texas, Ponderosa, a diplomatic message ''delivered with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer,'' quoth the Baltimore Sun. This is the message: Australia = good, brave, ''willing'' Commonwealth country; Canada = bad, stoner, un-''willing'' Commonwealth country. In case Canada is hard of hearing, the White House slapped a tariff on its wheat exports over the weekend to make sure it's paying attention.
The Canadian senate committee recently released a six hundred page, two year study of marijuana, and determined that it is no more harmful than Alcohol, if not less, and should be governed by the same sort of regulations. Even the Government thinks that this substance should be decriminalized if not legalized. The only problem remaining is the Bush Administration?s response and actions on this issue.

Um.... ok. I mean, I don't disagree. But, what the hell is that suppose to mean? Thats a strange preface to start with, I'd say. Also, yes. Canada is nifty, even though this is... months old? Not important, really. I'm glad you like it. (not that I, in any way, am responsible for anything, as such) I have been hearing things on this site for years about 'Moving to canada, because its great!'. Quite frankly, I don't think many people have done any such thing. Perhaps a few, and maybe more should? I just realized that I don't have much to say. I was in Canada for about a week a few months ago, and had a great time, (Banff is lovely.) but in reality, smoking marijuana illegally isnt a horrendously vile thing to do, and it doesnt make it any less enjoyable; that is, unless you get 'caught' Anyway, move to canada if thats what you want. I wouldn't do it based purely on the legal ramifications (or lack thereof) of a substance. There are other reasons, though. Give and take, my friend.

I live in ny, and in the local newspaper, they said the fines here are actually less than canadas, which I believe since when I did smoke and got caught, the fines were small...the first was 65$ for a little less that a quarter, and the second time it was 165$...no skin off my balls..............oh yeah.....

LOL I am not saying I would move to Canada. I just kinda feel for them after this B.S. the Bush Administration is putting them through. With all the fighting and crap this world is going through, I'm finding that Canadians are more like us than anyone else. Lots of Canadians I met at Brown were cool as shyt.

I saw something on TV the other night, they were talking to someone from the states who was opposed to the recent and (possibly) impending changes in Canada, and he referred to the potent BC marijuana as "the crack of marijuana". That made me laugh.

BC Bud baby. "oh Canada! Our home and native land!.."
I know as a Canadian, I've marveled at some of the notions Americans have had of Canada. We're not just like you, we ARE you! We were all founded from the same settlers, it's just that somewhere a line was drawn between us!
But anyways, I've gotten over the Canadian stereotype, and the American one we have for you. I live near Detroit Michigan, and spend alotta time there for concerts and shit. It's in America, and so is Hollywood, and so is backwoods West Virginia.
I've always wondered about the patriotic Americans who seem to think that they're little slice of the states is America! To me, the USA is more like 8 small countrys being held together with weakening glue. Although I've never been to South Carolina, if I knew nothing about the states, visited a ghetto in Detroit, a trailer park in south carolina, and las vegas, i'd swear i'd have seen three different countries.
But the point is, I think Canada is like the USA, but with blurred lines seperating us. Much more unity, because we encourage diversity throughout our country. Ok, maybe not Quebec, but most of the country!
Dunno, that's just my thoughts on it. and I don't speak for every Canadian, not even the ones i know. They can think for themselves.

I think our fines are around 100 Canadian.. I can't remember exactly.
NY sounds pretty lax then....But can't you get 10 years in prison in Nevada for having an eigth ounce of pot? Which kinda keeps with my previous post.

in quebec, we're first of all french, well for the most of us.
this is a big factor, I mean, we've been protecting our language for hundreds of years from england troops and then english aristocratic people abusing and exploiting our people.
we don't live really in Canada, we live in Quebec, don't get there I'm a separatist... I just mean, it's not the same things at all..
I'm proud we start to open ourselves to new things such as marijuana, alcohol is way worse IMO and it's legal.. All I see in a few years, is the legalization of marijuana.

I agree with you about Quebec. It isn't the same, i'm a bi-lingual French Canadian myself, living in southwest Ontario. Most of my family is from New Brunswick, with many living in Quebec as well. So i've been there many times, and i've been slighted by some of the hardcore Francos there. (example: I DO speak french, however, i've kind of lost my grammer/speaking skills over the years. It's very rusty.. I do understand French fluently still. Anyways, downtown Montreal I asked a clerk at a cafe where the bathroom was in french. Obviously my ontarian accent slipped out, cause she angrily answered me in English...ahh..ok. merci. :P)
It's no problem feeling pride for your heritage. What I don't understand about "Les Quebecois Seperatistes" is they don't care about preserving heritage so much as preserving THEIR heritage. If Quebecoises feel slighted by the Anglos, maybe they should take a look at what Europeans did to the Native American's culture first, and count their blessings that they still have what culture they do.
But the idea remains in my head, I think the best thing for us as Canadians is to continue to amalgamate and diversify our own culture. And this includes native, quebecois and even newfies! Instead of partitioning people and places because they want nothing to do with their fellow Canadians/Americans.
U-N-I-T-Y baby!

URGENT! Something ALL Americans need to know:
Canadian bacon is not the same thing as ham. Ham is sometimes sold as "Canadian bacon" but this is incorrect and damaging not only to the reputation of Canadian bacon, but also to the reputation of Canadians everywhere.
Real Canadian bacon is what is known as "peameal bacon". It is delicious. It is better than ham, but not quite as good as regular bacon. It's like a little bacon steaklet or something.
Thank you.

I recently watched Bowling for Columbine... it was sort of interesting, but the main thing that really struck me in that whole film, is the fact that most Americans always lock up their doors.
The doors in my house are always unlocked during the day, and I often leave the back door ajar so my animals can get in and out easily.

"I know as a Canadian, I've marveled at some of the notions Americans have had of Canada. We're not just like you, we ARE you! We were all founded from the same settlers, it's just that somewhere a line was drawn between us!" We are not the same. Canada is far more socialist than the US. America will never be exactly like Canada. Americans will not put up with the taxes(even though we pay alot). Also Canada has one incredibly small military. Might as well be non-existent. What would happen if Canada was invaded? They would rely on the US for help! I am tired of hearing people say they are going to move to Canada because they are tired of this country. I say go, quit your bitchin and leave. One of the major reasons some Canadians speak english is because way back when, Brittish sympathizers in America left the US after the revolution due to persecution from early Americans.

"Americans will not put up with the taxes(even though we pay alot)." Actually, americans pay the least taxes out of any first world country. "One of the major reasons some Canadians speak english is because way back when, Brittish sympathizers in America left the US after the revolution due to persecution from early Americans." That's the most retarded thing I've heard all day. The reason is that Canada was settled by the British and the French. Half the people here spoke english before british americans started coming up here. *edit* "Some Canadians speak english..." Dude, what the hell are you talking about. The vast majority of Canadians speak english. They only speak french in Quebec. Why the hell would someone make a post pointing out the differces between Canada and the US if they didn't know something as simple as this?

My whole point about taxes is that we pay less. That is a GOOD thing. Why would you want to dole out money to people who do not deserve it? And when you say that Canada was settled by the British and the French. You are correct, but the majority of people who settled Canada were French and most of the Brittish were coming from America who were dissatified by the way things were going here(anti-Brittish). Canada's original language was FRENCH! Of course the vast majority of Canadians now speak English, if they did not they would be missing out on the most profitable trades in the world, with the US. NAFTA?

I've seen many people get these tickets from the IV Foot Patrol police when I went to school at UC Santa Barbara, and no one was ever arrested (unless they were too incapacitated to walk, which meant they were either drinking or using some other substance concurrently).
Now a days on the central coast (Monterey Bay area) where I live out most of the year, the cops generally are not concerned with it unless you're flaunting it. People are tolerant and progressive and generally act with good intention.

"Why would you want to dole out money to people who do not deserve it?"
The money goes towards educating people, providing adequate police protection, and health care.
Where does the average american's money go? Mostly to a whole lot of big corporations. Do they deserve it?
You're completely ignoring the fact that the borders weren't at all what they are now. Upper and Lower Canada were two different countries at one point. What was originally founded as "Canada" is only a fraction of what is now Canada.
"Of course the vast majority of Canadians now speak English, if they did not they would be missing out on the most profitable trades in the world, with the US."
Well, if they all spoke french, it would mean that history had played out in a Completely different way, and the US would definately not be the same country it is.
The US is a shittier country than Canada for a bunch of reasons.
The US is based on backwards Christian puritanical ideals. Your government claims to separate church and state, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are many of your politicians fundamentalist Christians, but their attitudes are reflected in the laws that are being passed. Right now in Canada, people are trying hard to get the charter of rights and freedoms changed so that sexual orientation is something that cannot be discriminated against, meanwhile in the US, there's a movement afoot to try and change the constitution so that gay marriages will be banned.
Americans are wildly afraid of sex. There's no other first world country with such zealous opposition to things like sex education in schools, yet they also have the highest teen pregnancy rate in any first world country.
You can't swear or show sex and nudity on network television. So much for freedom of speech.
One in thirty-seven americans have been incarcerated at some point in their lives. Again, the highest in any first world country.
Drug laws are so harsh and strictly enforced that people would actually face JAIL TIME for a single joint. What kind of person would consider that a decent country?
The US still has the potential to be a good country, but what's holding it back it your "if you don't like it, leave" attitude. How about "if you don't like it, change it"? Maybe if half your population wasn't too lazy to vote, people would actually see things improving.

What would happen if canada was invaded ?! Are you serious man ? WHO would invade us ? why do such a thing ? Theres not a good reason to do it. Thats funny to see how paranoia makes people see the world.

"Also Canada has one incredibly small military. Might as well be non-existent. What would happen if Canada was invaded? They would rely on the US for help!"
Of course we have a small military, we have a tenth of the population of the USA over a larger land mass. Oh ya, and we don't have to start wars with small oil rich countries and lie to our population about it to line our top 2 percentile's pockets.
A little history lesson. Canada WAS invaded in 1812. By the USA. And we won. (Sorry, Canadians love to bring that little fact up all the time.)

I didn't read your whole post but...
I don't like Canada's governemnt. When I went to Canada, all the kids there said their govt is shit. When the FRENCH Prime Minister gets on to make a speech, he has a translator cuz the old hag wouldn't learn English. Shit, Bush at least speaks fluent Spanish for all the hispanics here.

"When the FRENCH Prime Minister gets on to make a speech, he has a translator cuz the old hag wouldn't learn English."
That's not true whatsoever. He does almost everything in english. He occasionally makes speeches in french, but he usually alternates with english.

Yeah, our PM can speak both English and French. He usually makes his speeches first in english, then in french.

I didn't know Bush could speak spanish... I think he should have mastered the English language before he took on a second one.
And, to all the Canadians I've irratated about comparing us to Americans, we're all the same.. at our cores. Meaning you could stick a typical American and Canadian in a room somewhere in england and they couldn't tell who was who.

Perhaps, perhaps not
Some of the things which piss me off the most ( christianism, drug laws, violence, guns ) are just too much present in USA for me to tell we're the same.

If you mean that we're all humans then obviously you are correct...but there are alot of subtle differences between Canadians and Americans, I'm pretty sure I could distinguish between the two if I was given 5 minutes with 'em...

"and that is mostly cuz i don't like the french"
Some people feel the same way about niggers.
I don't get how it's perfectly fine to be a bigot as long as it's towards the French.

My whole point about taxes is that we pay less. That is a GOOD thing. Why would you want to dole out money to people who do not deserve it?
that entirely depends on how you define "deserves". as has been previously stated the wealth of the US people is always being drained by big buisness and bullshit, corporate, "supply side" tax cuts. i live in Minnesota, a state known for providing its residents with exceptional social programs. i don't know if i deserve it, but without a health program called "minnesotacare," i might very well not be here. at the least i'd be absolutely miserable and incapacitated. every month the state of minnesota pays $300 (i pay a $50 premium) to ensure i recieve neccessary medications.
social programs aren't just handouts. they enable people to be more productive members of society, and help to balance corporate america's lack of integrity. when then citizens are healthy, the nation is healthy. when the citizen's are happy and well educated, they produce more, which increases the total revenue of the country, which goes to further enrich the national quality of life. sure, there's always gonna be sponges and wellfare mothers, but i think the value of providing for those in need than far outweighs the alternative.
