Starting a McDonald's Franchise!
    #1457260 - 04/14/03 02:21 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I'm thinking about stating a McDonald's franchise. I have already done the three interviews and been approved to purchase a license.
The problem is that i will have to go to McDonald's school for 12-15 months including 6 weeks of education in USA. I will start the restaurant in my home town and the people at McDonald's has found the perfect location. All i have to do now i say yes and the wheels will be set in motion.

Does anyone of you know anyone that owns a McDonald's? Is the money good? Is it very hard work? Do you think its a sound investment?

If you seriously have gone this far already shouldn't you know all these things by now?

I really haven't gone very far. I visited the Mcinco headquarters in stockholm three times where they interviewed me and let me work for a few hours in a restaurant.
The only thing i really know is what some administrator and management consultant told me. I just wanted to see if anyone has some actual experience with mcdonalds who dont actually work for them.

Its kind of scary actually not really knowing.

How much money are you going to have to pay to start a franchise?

The license costs 45k$ and the inventory costs about 350K and you need another 10k to start up a company. There are diffrent payment plans.

The thing is, once you get the first franchise up, it is much easier to get a second or third going. I worked at Subway and my boss owned three of them and was making a killing. It's very hard work though. Don't expect to get much sleep for a few years.

I think it would be a great idea to open a McDonalds (very high rate of sucess) but you'll probably have to work very hard. I would go to lawschool if I were you, but I still think being a franchise owner would be great.

A law degree would be sweet to have but I'm getting kind of sick of studying. I already have two years of economy studies so I'm not sure if i wanna do another 3. Lawyers dont make that much money anyway in sweden.

the first questioln you should ask yourself if you got the money to start such a big investment in a first place... if you do then go ahead, you will probly succeed, it's preatty hard to fail witha macdonalds unless you sell cheesburges at your local puyblic bathroom...

I would go for owning a subway. Subway's are easy to run, and alot of the time the owner works most of the shifts, so he knows that everything is done right and he can make sure the customers are happy. And you only have to pay about two employees. I think that would be bad ass. And buying into a subway would be way cheaper. And subways are hella popular.

Funny thing that you're looking into this. I was looking at franchise ops myself in March and I came across this article in BusinessWeek regarding the current state of the franchise and what present franchisee's are saying about their business and profit concerns.

You might want to read up more on the new CEO and his vision for pulling the franchise licenses away from laggard restaurants that fall behind in performance levels

Personally, I'd recommend operating a small network of Subway stores, as someone already mentioned, as those businesses are much more turn-key and low maintenance, logistically, then a larger franchise. Your profit return on a 4 store Subway op would be comparable if not better than one McDonald's and a helluva a lot less variables to deal with, not to mention 750K-1,000,000 in start-up costs (which includes costs of construction. I don't know if you investing in the pricey free-standing building op, or the one that you can open in a mall.)

If you have that type of capital to invest and want a larger operation, Taco Bell has been outperforming McDonald's in a lot of growth areas and as far as I can recall, they only have 4 month management/ownership training sessions. They won't even look at your application, however, unless you have intent and the net worth to open multiple stores. And apparently they also have a temporary freeze on any new overseas franchising for the rest of the year, so you'd have to wait awhile, just to get your app reviewed, credit checks and whatnot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks allot for the links.
Holy shit there seems to be rough times for McDonald's ahead. The net margin is only four fucking percent? thats fucking worthless. The article did say that sales in Europe was up one percent last year so that feels comforting.
I'm gonna do some more research.

Open a McDonalds??! What the fuck?? Sell drugs, whore your ass, or suck cock but DON'T FOR CHRIIST'S SAKE OPEN A MCDONALDS!!

Honestly dude, those places are the fucking pits. Whatever charities they run or community actions they fund they're essentially built on low wages, animal cruelty at a very high level and extremely unhealthy food pushed as if it's gods gift. Be part of the decline but make sure you stay the fuck in America.
