What does illness teach us?
    #7059014 - 06/17/07 09:31 PM (16 years, 9 months ago)

I am not that imaginitive in this regard. I can only come up with two:

1. A reminder of our morality and that the time of our demise is unknown. I was very strong and vigorous Thursday night and by Friday night was almost unable to move. Merely standing took all the strength I had.

2. To be appreciative when ones' health returns.

What have any of you learned from being very sick or seriously injured?

Sometimes that is the case and sometimes not.

I was blindsided by some sort of viral infection that I cannot attribute to lifestyle or any other apparent factor regarding personal choice.

Well this is true.
But that's all I could come up at the given moment, other besides the ones you mentioned.
I guess I also learned what to do next time I have a similar illness so I can make the healing process more efficient (if possible).

Or is it that you're looking for a spiritual teaching of some sort? :strokebeard:

Physical pain can be a real pain in the neck (and i did have severe neck pain until recently). Sometimes suffering does not make you stronger, it just makes living your life more challenging.

When my scoliosis was mostly healed all I could think was how much better life was without it and how I prayed my back would continue to get better. I did not learn anything from the back pain besides learning how not to exasperate the problem.

That there is no equalizing force in regard to human suffering. Sometimes people suffer and it is inexplicable. That's when people look to something like "karma" to lend a sense of justice to a reality that has no basis in human justice.

It does not teach us anything.  As with any other experience in our lives, it may be used as a lab in which to apply that which we already know.

I like the practice suggested in Stephen Levine's book, "A Year to Live," in which any illness is used as practice for dying.  When incapacitated and in pain, it seems impossible to avoid suffering.  After all, this is an intolerable situation!  It's not fair!  Why me, Lord, why me?  :hissyfit:

But when we enter into this situation consciously, with the intention of making it useful, it is possible to practice what we preach.  We can take full responsibility for our experience, even the fact that our immune response was not sufficient to prevent a viral infection, and shed all trace of victimhood.  We can immerse ourselves in listening to the consequences of our choices, whether those choices involved neglecting our health, not paying attention (and thus avoiding an accident), associating with untrustworthy people, and so on.

This stance is far more empowering, and has resulted in faster resolution of illness and injury in my small-scale study.
