Hmmm maybe I'll start looking in the soccer fields. Well taken care of grass, public place, sounds like a plan.

all subb stems I have seen were reddish and twisted(by that I mean the little lines on the stem),with teeny tiny little hairs.

the lines were twisting up the stem?

I looked at xmushes pics.
so if the gills are definatly brown when matured there probably pan foes...

if you look at the bottom close up picture of the gill shot you can see the lines on the stem.don't know if they are always twisted but on ones I've seen they were.http://www.shroomery.org/wiki/pmwiki.php/Hunting/PanaeolusSubbalteatus

its very hard in some cases when the mushroom is VERY FRESH and just sprouted to see the lines go up the mushroom. if you handle the stem a little bit you should be able to see it in a light or after a little bit of waiting.

Sounds more like pan. foenisecii to me, but go back and check anyway. Habitat sounds good enough.

Subb stems can be very light. Ive had quite a few that never turned a dark red. they just stayed tan.

This stem is all of the above, Tan, red, and blue! The variations are vast and the stems can be just a solid color too.

Just check the spore print and it should all be good. But know the color! if its death black/african night, then its good. if its just dark, kinda ambiguous, you probably have a foe.

Heres a picture of spore print differences between foes and subbs.
