Coal can be made into oil for about $35 a barrel. The United States has enough coal to last us thousands of years (even taking into account increased population and usage). There is always the oil shale out in Colorado as well (they are to the point that they are getting an energy return on it). And the tar sands up in Canada are full of oil.
The end of cheap oil is here. The end of oil completely....nope.
You Peak Oil people are way too Doomsday-ish.

I thought the point was that they already knew and don't care, and are planning to milk the whole process dry until it runs out and they can abandon ship with their multimillions.

And where did you get that figure of coal-to-oil costing $35 a barrel?
If that was true, coal-to-oil would be HUGE by now...as we have had several years of oil over $35 a barrel.

Energy analysts reckon that some coal-to-liquids projects can offer an acceptable return on investment when oil is priced as low as $30 or $35 a barrel
The reason they haven't done it is because it would cost a lot of money to build the coal-to-oil infrastructure.

Energy analysts reckon that some coal-to-liquids projects can offer an acceptable return on investment when oil is priced as low as $30 or $35 a barrel, though such ventures might require government tax incentives to reduce operating costs.
South Africa also had to lend Sasol $6 billion dollars to get them to build the plants in the first place.
As well, coal-to-oil produces nearly twice the CO2 as conventional oil.

The oil sands are incredibly energy intensive and an extremely dirty recovery. It may be an alternative to drilling for "cheap" oil, but not if we are trying to reduce emissions.
