Gas prices revisited

The price of gas went up 20 cents per litre just last night here. I don't think I've ever seen such a hike before.
If they're raising the price this much all the way up here in Canada...I can only imagine what the situation is/will be like in the SE US....
Anyone else seeing hikes like this?

Yea it's pretty outrageous. I don't know if you ever watch breakfast television on CityTV but the producer of the show came out for a segment to talk about the prices and called the oil companies crooks outright. It was refreshing to hear the truth on television once in awhile. He said they are all price gouging because of Katrina and came right out and said it is theivery plain and simple. I commend him.

A friend of mine phoned my best friend last night, telling her that they were going to raise the price today for regular at his gas station from like 2.40ish to $2.99!! Unfortunately I was too lazy to ride up the street last night and fill up. I haven't stepped outside yet today, but I hope the place up the road isn't that high

I went on a coffee run this morning and saw all gas stations at 1.10/litre except one that was at 1.01....they were lined up 2 blocks.

I just filled up last night at .95 luckily. I wonder how much more they will raise it for labour day weekend?
The revolution is coming people. This is something that is going to affect everyone in a drastic way. From this day forward this situation is only going to get worse and people are going to get angrier. The sky is the limit for gas prices. The oil companies are going to get away with anything they fucking want. They have us all by our proverbial balls and they are starting to squeeze.

I told everyone I could last night to go fill up their tank if they needed gas, because I had a hunch prices were going up at least 20-25 cents per liter. Only one of my friends believed me, but he didn't seem to care enough to get any fuel.
Now today they're all kicking themselves for NOT filling up last night
I don't think this is price-gouging, either. There are scattered reports of shortages coming in from parts of the US (and not just the parts hit by Katrina!).
This type of event was predicted years ago by guys like Colin Campbell, and should be good evidence that we have peaked or are currently peaking in world oil production.
Hurricanes in the past, while strong, have not caused widespread shortages beyond the area directly affected by the hurricane. That was because we had spare capacity both to produce oil and refine it into gasoline. All this has changed over the past couple years. Demand now matches Supply. This has made supply very tight - tight enough so that any disruption of the chain (from well to gas pump) will cause wild price fluctuations at best, and shortages at worst.
Matt Simmons has called this the "trigger event" which will cause oil prices to really start their post-peak climb. Only time will tell, at this point.

I think we should urge our government to shut it's doors to the world oil enocomy. No more exporting. Canada is an oil producing nation and we should keep it all domestic. It's coming down to every nation for itself anyway.
Also who knows if there really are shortages. It's been said all over that it's because of the hurricane which may or not be true but at this point they can use any and every excuse to jack up the prices even more. And I somehow doubt that the prices will go back down(ahem) to the dollar mark after this hurricane is over and done with. Everytime they raise it up it will stay that way until they raise it even more.

I completely agree - Canada should shut it's borders to oil exports.
Unfortunately we signed that stupid NAFTA agreement....which says we can't. We'll have to break a few treaties to close the border...
I also seriously expect the US to invade Canada when/if we ever stopped sending our energy south...

Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the USA. We send the US 99% of the oil we export. In 2004 we shipped the US an average of 1.64 million barrels per day.
The loss of this import capacity could be devastating to the US. If we ever actually did it...I'm sure the US would have a few choice words (and munitions) for Canada. I doubt it will ever happen, though, because our government is run by pussies who don't know how to say "no"

For sure the US would invade. Our governernment really is run by a bunch of pussies. They would probably let their own citizens go dry while exporting our remaining oil to the US. Too bad Canada is too weak to kick the shit out of the US like we did in 1812.

a friend of mine in Florida (SouthEast Us) told me gas prices we're going to raise .90 cents last night there. I'm not sure if this is valid, but i've seen no sign of gas price inflation here in Indiana. Gas seems steady at $2.65 a gallon, but is certainly subject to change.

Gas prices are rising b/c of shortages. The main ports that have the infrastructure to import oil in the US are in the southern ports. Unfortunately, all of this infrastructure is under water.
Thank god for free public transportation for students where I live. No paying for gas for me!

yeah, bikes are the way to go right now if you have short commutes. i decided im gonna tap into my savings and go out next weekend to get one. it just seems like ive been thinking about it for years, and wasting money all the while. could use the exercise...could use the money...and i think, as others see more people riding bikes, it encourages even more people to do the same. a bike revolution is about to happen, me thinks i wont be selling my car, but i might take it off the road for a while.
anyone ride bikes during the winter months? do you have to use spiked tires or something?

i drive home from the city every day. there was this one biker that i would see every day weaving through traffic, narrowly missing cars, not looking where he was going, now this is one of the busiest streets in town, always loaded with traffic. everyday he rode his bike like this, there were a few times when he bolted out in front of me and i narrowly missed him. then one day i was at work and we had the news on tv, guess who got plowed over by a tractor trailer? yup the trucker didn't even see him, he got sucked into one of the back wheel wells and the only reason the trucker noticed was because a bunch of cars were honking at him and yelling to pull over. so if you're buying a bike make sure you're safe, this guy was an apparent idiot. and remember, a helmet won't save you if you get hit by a car...

Prolly no need for spiked tires.
I live in MN, and usually a thin and tready cyclocross tire does the trick.
The biggest factor is staying warm, and is totally doable with the right garb.
I wear hiking boots, wool socks, light snowpants, thermal undershirt, hoody, and windbreaker. For my face, its a hat, facemask, and goggles. Works good, and I stay warm sub zero. Just dont let yerself cool off, cuz yer sweat will freeze and that sucks big time.

I go to school in Statesboro, GA. Gas here rose from $2.6* something to $3.00, and they are saying that by tonight there will be no more gas in the town. All of our gas stations are lined up. My roommate and my friend just left to go fill up.
Thank god I filled up yesterday :P To bad my bike got stolen a week or so ago

Just wait until it's not funny for any of us, car or no car. Wait until everything rises in prices due to inflation. Wait until everything that needs to be imported (ie. food/produce) goes up in price from higher trucking costs, etc.
Not funny.

So what. You reap what you sow. You cant expect to go on raping the planet and not see some consequences from your actions at some point. The spikes in petroleum based products are what you get for building your entire economy on a non-renewable resource of which the major supplies are out of your jurisdiction.
We deserve whatever we get.

I just think society as a whole has a big lesson to learn before this is all said and done. Gas prices being the least of our concerns. Indeed, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The beast will show its ugly face soon enough.

Hey Trendal, if your talking about me, I went last night with my gf's car to fill up at 95 cents, now it's 1.17
I didn't have my car so I couldn't go get gas (As I still have my mom's car, stupid car being in the shop)

Gas here is now in the $3.16 to $3.20 range for regular unleaded.
On the plus side, my car gets 27 mpg on the freeway at 9 over the limit, the speed I always drive at. On the down side, I have to use 91 octane or higher.
On the double plus side, I don't have a commute. I work from home.

Nah really... it's not your fault man. Veggie fuel has been around for over 100 years. Blame the government and the oil companies for supressing it from you and everyone else.

The next few weeks are going to be a GOOD example of what living through Peak Oil will be like. Supply disruptions of several days, weeks, or a couple months will result from things that never used to cause problems.
Take note of what happens. It will become much more normal over the next 10 years, I expect.
At first it will be short-term supply disruptions due to "the little things" that never used to result in supply problems. Storms and terrorism will have a large effect on oil production because demand will almost be equal with production - there is no room for error. Eventually the disruptions will be caused by a plain lack of supply. By that point we will be post-peak, probably 5-10 years.

Earlier today the EPA announced that they were going to waive some of the restrictions on diesel and gasoline, letting the oil companies sell dirty fuel. At first it was just for the affected area, but in Bush's speech this afternoon he said it was now for the whole country.
Why conserve...when you can damage the environment instead?

You obviously live in a hole/cave/box. There are refineries down there that are UNDER WATER that give us 10% of our oil.

You get your oil from different parts of the world. Most (if not all) of your gasoline is refined in the USA.
Apparently a good deal of that oil from other countries was shipped to the New Orleans port (there's actually an offshore oil terminal called LOOP). All that has been shut down by the hurricane, so no oil is being offloaded at NO. That wouldn't be too much of a problem because Bush just released oil from the reserve to cover it.
The thing that is a problem is that 8-10 refineries have been shut down by the hurricane. There's enough oil sitting around, but not enough refining capacity - so less gasoline.
I heard BBC is reporting 20 rigs in the Gulf are "missing", probably means they're on the bottom. Something like 90% of the rigs in the Gulf were shut down due to the storm, and not all of them have even started to come back online yet. Many could take months to be repaired.
It's a messy situation, to say the least.

Did anyone see that made-for-TV movie a few months back, "Oil Storm"??
I heard this is eerily similar to what happens in the movie: a hurricane shuts down Gulf production/refining and then the Saudi's have a revolution and stop selling to the US.

There are gas stations in my town that are out of gas.I think the people around here will go into a frenzy if there is a huge shortage.
Anywhere you go you see people in huge suv's with gas cans filling up everything that they have.

Someone may have mentioned this already. I've been on top of the Katrina coverage and today the U.S. Coast guard went out to check the status of the oil rigs in the gulf. I don't know how many we regularly had but they said 20 of them were off and afloat or sunk. Some they showed knocked loose and leaking oil.
Then they panned the port where the refinery is and it was demolished.
So there is some truth to the problems Katrina caused with our ability to produce oil and gas from the gulf right now.
I don't know if that justifies price hikes or how much of one if it does. We're up to about 3 dollars a gallon now in Tampa, Fl.
What a mess!

How is the US going to bomb other countries for their oil if there isn't enough left for their jets and tanks?
It will be war for the sake of war. War to get oil to fuel more war. Amazing.
