A rant in the woods
    #6933493 -

I am a person who lives for the outdoors, or IMO I am. I try to spend as much time as possible out away from the stresses of (sub)urban life. One thing that gets me slightly annoyed is how some persons go out to seemingly "enjoy" nature, and leave their traces behind for the next person to enjoy. My recent favorite is the abundance of fucking Tim Horton's cups.

This morning, while attempting to enjoy my nature with me pups, I came across my usual garbage and picked it up as I went. A ways down the trail, I came across a guy out for his morning power walk (at least that's what it looked like he was doing) and in the vicinity was a mylar balloon. You should have seen the look on this guys face as I stooped to pick up the balloon and he noticed the rest of the garbage in my hand. He almost couldn't believe that some dude out walking his dog was picking up garbage, or at least that's what the look in his eyes said.

So, after my rant, I want to introduce this poll:
If you come across garbage in the woods, what is your reaction???
You may choose only one

My father taught me as a young boy to pick up as you carry on.

I'm constantly picking up trash when I'm outdoors, when I go out fishing, hiking or mushroom hunting, I'll often bring an extra bag or bucket to carry trash in.

I'm no advocate of leave no trace though, they make us out to be aliens of the forest when I believe we are caretakers of the earth.

I must say that I totally hear you on that one. Each time I go to the forest I must see leftovers, empty bottles and who knows what other shit. It's really disturbing to see how people disrespect the nature

To answer your question, sometimes I take the garbage I encounter on my way to through the forest. I hope I'll do it even more in the future and I think that the post that you just made will be a good reminder.

And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

What really pisses me off is when people leave diapers laying around. I have children and would NEVER do that. If you are just gonna leave it there, then take the diaper off and let the kid go naked! When I go walking with my boys I usually end up with a handful of beer cans. Always forget to take a bag with me.

I never pick up the garbage, but I commend you for your selfless service.

I was walking around between classes one day, a hippy girl I kind of know rides or walks by, and she sees someone littering and yells at him.

The understanding that litter is disrespectful (blasphemous!) is completely right, but the method of engagement is not.

I suppose on the one hand if everyone who cared were fired up about it, rather than apathetic, the litterbugs might get verbal ass-kickings enough to make a considerable change in reality, although the connundrum is that as long as the voices that reinforce waste are stronger than those that reinforce conservation, it will perhaps be in vain.

I would propose that one simply observes nakedly without judgment (albeit the immediate impression is that nature has been tarnished, that what you see is ugly, but no graspings with the conceptual mind need be made) and pick up and throw away, as self-less as Jesus on the cross. Some depict him suffering but I think of it more like the number of realized beings that selflessly undergo such things without flinching.

If we can be like that, then the guy in his dream sphere, meeting our dream sphere, will have less of a reason to get his ego involved. He won't notice someone trying to "punish" or the negative energy, thereby boosting his confidence up saying "damn these guys are nutty it's just one balloon" instead he sees someone with deep compassion (for Earth) taking care of it.

Like those commercials with the Navajo crying beneath all the pollution. It is indeed accurate.

We have a scalpel, we hack up nature into such obscene bits of mutilation that we all but are robotic beings. It is a blasphemy against unity and the sacred geometries present in our natural world. When we build with non-sacred geometries as crude monkeys hammering our fists against things, we become dis-eased and this manifests as literal disease and a vicious host of things that simply CANNOT be if one is living more in tune with the land.

I used to live in a coal mining region, so scattered throughout the forests were anti-oasis wastelands, various abandoned utility roads, sink holes and polluted bodies of water.  They weren't really as aesthetically displeasing as it sounds and the made for some good areas to ride my dirt bike, but white trash folk would always drive out with truckloads of trash and just dump off their old couches, refrigerators, mattresses, recliners, ovens, tires, you name it..  That was very unsettling.  But the forests remained mostly pristine at least.

Now I live in one of the dirtiest first world cities in existance and when I go to parks at night if I see trash I'll pick it up and toss it (there's usually a garbage can withing 20 feet anyway ).

There is always a shit load of condoms, cigarette packets and toilet paper in the woods in the big park where I live. Fucking gross. I'm definitly not going to pick up any condoms or toilet paper... but it makes me so furious. Maybe if I had one of those garbage grabber things instead of my bare hands...

It's nice to see that other people are also annoyed by the trashing of life. I must admit that when I was younger, I mostly (not always) used to just look and bitch but then leave it. I'm not quite sure when my philosophy on this whole matter changed, but probably sometime after my night on 2ct-7(?). I have been thinking about trying to organize a community cleaning of some of the local parks, but don't even know how to go about such a task. I don't understand why such a task hasn't been established as an annual activity. It is a community park, so I would like to see the community come out and act as such.

Pick a time, day and meeting place, and put up some posters! That's all it really takes. Get a couple friends to commit to showing up, and in the very least you guys will be there. There will probably be others as well. What a great way to connect with people in your community:grin:

I was on the north shore of Moloka'i, I am more of a beach type rather than woods (love Oregon), and I was so disgusted by what I saw that I almost had to vomit. Bottles, plastic, fishing nets, buoys, styrofoam all up and down the beach along most of the north shore. I could have spent the rest of my vacation on that clean up and it still would have looked like a dump. Considering that Hawaii is in the middle of the pacific it really makes me worry about our oceans. As for picking any of it up... nope. I just kind of stood in awe. Damn litter asses.

Now I live in a small town, but if you wanted to organize a clean up your local newspaper might  run an ad for you for free as well.  I know they would here.  Don't know about larger cities but couldn't hurt to ask. :plur:
