casing mix question. Roger welcome :)
    #6950566 -

It's 4 in the morning where I'm at and rather then continue poking through archives and abusing the search button in the way only a "grower of the other questionable species" can, I'm just going to ask.

I have some jars, they are colonized rye berries 1 qt a pop. Major ups to the man who wrote the tek for rye by the way.

I'm about to go through the "casing" process, I know the casing is really just the top layer, but bare with me... there's more.

I was thinking of making the substrait layer out of a 50/50 coir verm mix, or a 2 parts coir one part verm mix. Then after that casing with moister control miracle grow.

is there a problem with this? will it work? is there anything I need to know? should I go 2 parts coir to one part verm or 50/50?

1 inch of 50/50 or the other, 1 inch of rye(colonized), 1/4 an inch of MGMC. Sound good??? <-- important question

help me out here, I've grown shrooms but this "casing stuff" is driving me nuts.

15 1/2 Cups of vermiculite
12 Cups of sphagnum peat moss
3 1/2 Cups of coco coir
2 Tablespoons of hydrated lime
3 1/2 Cups of oyster shell lime

thats what I use, its pretty popular around here

Have a look at these 2 threads, they helped me when I decided to try coir as a substrate.

For the casing layer, if you've got 50/50 use it at 1/4-1/2" max.

I inoculate rye in quart jars, spawn to 100% coir, case with local-garden-shop-brand seed starter mix (verm & peat, ph buffered with gypsum...premixed, no muss, no fuss).

this method has never failed to produce for me.

I am coming to the conclusion that all this "what's the perfect substrate? what's the perfect casing mixture?" is just wasted energy...cubes are remarkably easy to grow.

I don't want the casing layer to be too nutrient rich or I'll have to deal with contamination. hence the Idea for the MGMC, but I do want the sub straight layer to be very rich, hence the idea for the 50/50.

is this the right thinking?

has anyone used MCMG for a casing layer around here?

should I really just use a coir verm mix all around?

don't use coir for casing, even in a mixture.

do 1/4-1/2" of seed starter mix...the main benefit of using it is that it's already mixed and ph buffered.

just look at the ingredients. if the primary ingredients are vermiculite and peat moss, bam, you're in business.

seed starter is a good casing material because it's formulated to be unappealing to contams. also, it's cheap and readily available.

don't make this more complicated than it is.

50/50 is a casing mix not substrate.  50 verm/50 peat moss

Coir isn't recomended for casing, only in very small amounts if used.

Not sure why you want to use 50/50 coir verm mix for substrate.  Most people use it straight or add maybe 20% verm.  If you would've read the links I posted for you, you'd know that.

Lots of people have used MCMG for casing layers.  Try doing a search for "MCMG" and see.
READ.

so as far as a casing mix, MGMC will work, maybe spike it with 10% verm?

but the question stands, how much coir to how much verm for the lowest layer (substraight right)?

I'm only asking because I get so many different takes on it. It's like there are so many people trying so many new things, I just want to know what will work... not what a million different people are trying.

I'm just use to proven formulas.

so to reinterate, a verm mgmc mix for the top... and what 70/30 coir verm for the lower?

:foreheadslap:
Dude, use 1 freaking gallon of hot water and dump on a brick of coir.
There's your substrate.
Read Oatmans coir tek, I posted it for you, its super simple.

Use 50 verm/50 peat moss for a casing if you can, if not then use MGMC.  If you want to mix some vermiculite in it then its not gonna hurt.

ok then, I'll use verm for my substraight... then I'll use 50/50 for the casing.

so, 3 to 4 inches of verm, then and inch or so of the rye... let it set covered with aluminum foil. then after three days put 1/2 an inch of 50/50 or MGMC on top.

do I have this right... yes or no, please don't refer me to anymore teks... I've read them, it's just there are so many different opinions I want one I can just go... yes, this is how I'm doing it too.

so are the portions and time line right?

Ok man you somehow interpreted this all wrong if you think you're using verm as your substrate.

OK, I'm sorry to be negative, but I think it's time for you to find a dealer.

Just be sure to pay in dollars/pounds/marks/pesos...NOT vermiculite.

If you think that Verm alone is a substrate you haven't read the teks very well.

Verm isn't nutritious by itself.

a substrate has to have some form of nutritional value...so the mushrooms have something to eat.

so no you didn't have this right...

so do some more reading!~

you know what bother me the most, my greenhouse would make most of you guys blow a fuse.

ok last time over this. I'm spawning straight to COIR <-- what I meant to say last time, about 3 inches worth in the pan. then I'll put down an inch of rye, put it back in the incubator covered until fully colonized (9 days or so), then I'll do a casing with 50/50 about an 1/2 an inch thick. return it to the incubator for a couple of days until the myc starts to pop through... do a little light patching on it then straight to the flowering chamber.

I'm not an idiot, It's just I'm forcing flowering right now and drying a crop at the same time, my damn CO2 injection set up burnt out and well... I haven't been sleeping great.

bare with me, trust me when I say I'm a good person to have in the community. Now, did I get this right?
