Actually, I'm gonna go with a 70/25 Peat Moss/Verm casing mix. I thinking of foregoing the Calcium Carbonate since it's really hard to find this time of year. Any thoughts on this? I think it's a Ph thing, the oyster shell that is, which I have no easy way of measuring anyhow. And anyhow when the tek says "a small amount" is added to the casing mix, could they possibly be more vaugue? I mean what the hell do they mean by "a small amount" Anyhow, is it ok to just say screw the oyster shell?

the step your talking about....skipping the oyster shell......well that will be just fine. No big deal! Although it will help in area's at certain situation's. Your mixture ratio of 75/25 peat to verm, will must likly work also....but the tek your doing is called 50/50, it consist's of 50....peat., and 50.....verm. Now the 50/50+ is 50% peat., with 50% verm. and something like 8-10% lime, oyster shell. I don't have much in the way of measuring devises myself, but I've used the 50/50+ .....just kinda eyeball it. Alittle here, and alittle their.....it work's fine.

thanks for the reply fiddler. I know that the 50/50 reffered to the amounts of Peat/Verm. I just read this tek that recommends 75/25 as a variation on it. Do you know of anyplace online I can get the powdered oyster shell? :-)

I read that the crushed oyster shell was preferred for its texture. Lime works well to deal with the pH because it mixes in evenly with the casing layer.

yeah, the HYDRATED lime is for the ph (not diolithic? is that correct? anyway the hydrated kind) the oyster shell is for texture and strenth of the casing mix. I do really like it though 'cause you can really tell when you pick them how much more sturdy the casing mix is. Try checking feed stores if you have them in your area. i got mine at a store called Orschelin's, they are a chain but I don't know if they are national or if you are even in the US.
