alternate 50/50+ casing?

Has anyone ever made a 50/50+ casing without the crushed oyster shells? Will this ingredient make a huge difference in the casing? Should I still use hydrated lime in the substrate if I can't get ahold of the crushed oyster shells or should i just do a regular 50/50 casing?

just about anything that can hold moisture, is a suitable casing, however your best results will be from something like 50/50 with Lime.... you dont necessarily need crushed oyster shells, but you would be surprised how easy it is to find them.

If you have any major brand pet store near you, Ie: PetSmart, they carry crushed oyster shells, you'll usually find it somewhere in the BIRDS section... if they say they don't have them, make them look it up in the computer, the company that sells them is called HAGEN i believe....

That's probably the toughest thing to find for the 50/50+ , the crushed oyster shell....

it should be fine with just the lime but you can find crushed oyster shells at any lawn and garden shop as well as the pet store (as previously mentioned) if u want to put them both in your mix.

All the local pet shops either didn't carry it or were out and i don't feel like waiting to order some.. thats all..

The oyster shells aren't necessary.. it only adds structure to the casing layer.. you can live without them.
