Well, that was interesting, informative, disturbing and chilling -- thanks for sharing, Dr.Camacho. I'd want to do a bit more personal research before I accepted everything that was presented as absolute fact, but I have no doubt that such things can and do happen.
In keeping with the theme, here's a collection of three articles. The author is a psychologist who works with individuals who have been in cults. He has some insights to offer for those who find themselves drawn to participate in groups and communities. I'd recommend reading all three because each of us engage in cult behaviors to some degree, although we may not be consciously aware of it. Meantime, a rule of thumb I've found helpful is: Be open to learning from everyone; follow no one. . Edited by spiritualemerg (05/15/07 08:58 PM)

This excerpt from one of the above articles is worthy of sharing...
Just as it is important to have a means of judging a spiritual teacher, it also is important for the ex-cult member and the therapist to be able to answer the more general question: "Is this group a cult?" Patients need to be able to answer that question to avoid making the same mistake again, and therapists are likely to be asked that question by a worried parent or spouse. Usually, the group in question has obvious cult trappings, but society abounds with groups and organizations that appear normal but have the potential for cultlike behavior: large corporations, political groups, professional organizations, government bodies, and established religions. These sectors of normal society seldom are thought to share characteristics with The People's Temple or the less dramatic groups such as the Moonies and the Krishna devotees collecting money in airports, however, careful study of cults reveals four basic cult behaviors that occur to varying degrees in almost all groups, including those that do not have a strange appearance or engage in bizarre behavior. Identifying these basic behaviors permits one to replace the question, "Is this group a cult?" with the more practical one, "To what extent is cult behavior present?" The latter question is more useful because in the field of the transpersonal, as elsewhere, there is a continuum of groups ranging from the most benign and least cultlike to the most malignant and destructive. THE FOUR BASIC CULT BEHAVIORS . Edited by spiritualemerg (05/15/07 10:20 PM)

in hopes that atleast one person will at the very least skim over it, here are some legal rebuttals concerning many of the lawsuits filed against scientology, including information (surprisingly not given by this video) regarding many of the claims made against scientology.
http://www.lisamcpherson.org/cos Let me first say that I dont believe Scientology has always acted ethically. There are some questionable actions they have made that I strongly disagree with, but they are in no way on the level of what this video wants you to believe. I lived in Clearwater, Fl when Lisa McPherson died, and witnessed the protests, the legal proceedings, and what the papers reported everyday for a few months. what you usually will not hear in the case of Lisa Mcpherson is things like this.
-from the Pinellas county judge ruling over one of the cases.
The bias in this video is laughable, as well as some made up facts, such as how LRH stole 200 million from Scientology. In the link given above, it tells the history of the organization CAN.
So, Scientology bankrupted CAN and now owns and operates it. Also, if one considered the link between CAN and the Waco incident with the Branch Davidian compound, where ATF used tanks and shot fire into the compound, one can hardly say that there wasnt CAN involvement in the decision of infiltrating and literally attacking groups labelled as cults. but dont take my word for it.
http://www.ex-iwp.org/docs/1993/ as far as suicides go.... well they happen. If this is really such a big issue and the caretakers of suicide "victims" are to blame, then lets start enforcing it, starting with all the people who commit suicide under the care of psychiatrists, mental wards and psychotropic drugs prescribed by psychiatrists. but where is that video at? like I said before, Scientology isnt wholly innocent, but neither is any religious organization for that matter. I feel some flack is justified, but no more than any other religious organization, which is the only reason I put so much effort into these boards to raise awareness and give the "other side of the story" which is most often swallowed by misinformation perpetuated by ignorance and anger driven agendas driven by such. I have given up trying to truly debate the issue, because I have found that most people will ignore any factual data that shows scientology in a good light.... so i have resolved to only post "the other side of the story".

I also find it funny that the music they used was from "Requiem for a Dream".... something that on its own instills thoughts of epic devastation and morally corrupt actions.
Like Spiritualemerg stated, make up your own mind about it, dont let someone elses biased presentation make your mind up for you... kind of like "Loose Change". Im not here to change peoples minds regarding Scientology, but merely balance the information that they are given as well as show misinforming propaganda for what it is, where applicable.

while the process is different, as well as the aims and results, auditing can best be described as Psychoanalysis.
I use that term so you understand what it is like. Instead of sitting on a couch talking to someone, you are sitting in a chair, holding a pair of e-meter cans (basically a lie detector), talking to someone.

pinkfloydms: What were they tealking about when they said "audits"? If I told you, would you believe me? Or more to the point... should you believe me? Truth is, most of what I know of Scientology has been gleaned from SouthPark and they may be funny, but they're not necessarily factual. Tell you what, pinkfloydms, why don't you run your question through a couple of search engines -- the internet is the world's biggest libary. Don't be willing to stop at one point of view but rather, gather information from a number of perspectives. Be discerning, weigh it out, consider the evidence. Then, and only then, will you be capable of making up your own mind. However -- if you insist -- I can tell you my version of what an "audit" is, but first, I'll need the secret decoder information from the back of your credit card. . -------------------- ~ Kindness is cheap. well, sadly, scientology is one of the few things that internet searches will show biased information on.
Im willing to bet that the gist of what will come up will through a google search will comprise of the false statement that you are "shocked with cans by a person reading a meter to rid you of body thetans". Which then might go on to give you a false definition of what body thetans or thetans are. Honestly, I have spent countless hours doing internet research on Scientology, and the only website that has factual information regarding Scientology is Scientology.org. Xenu and clambake are the real science fiction writers....

I hear a lot of conflicting things about Scientology, and I'm not sure to believe. Based on what I've seen, I think L. Ron Hubbard was a con man who started a religion to make a lot of money. However, as a former member of Ordo Templi Orientis, he studies mysticism and occultism, and seems to have incorporated some of these legitimate ideas into his religion. As such, I'm sure there's plenty there that can help some people.
I'm also rather suspicious of their fear of psychology. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that auditing and other aspects of their religion are a form of psychology, and fearing the competition, they demonize it, in much the same way that pharmaceutical companies fund anti-drug ads. I also think the Xenu stuff is wierd, but as I understand it, that's only taught to higher-level members. --------------------

it isnt that they fear competition. They believe Psychiatry/psychology should be put into the realm of religion.
As it stands, it promotes itself as a science, even though almost every aspect of it deals with the subjective aspects of human behaviour.

I personally think of it as a social science, and social science tends to be a mix of science and philosophy.

You probably know more about Scientology than I do psyilocyberin. Although I do have one article linked at my blog that is written by a member of the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights, it wasn't until after I'd posted it that I was aware of the link between that organization and Scientology. Nonetheless, I kept it in place because regardless of the "bad hype" regarding the messenger, the information is factual.
It should be borne in mind that all activities and behaviors exist along a spectrum. An example of that might be found in the diversity of people who partake of "shrooms" -- not everyone does them, not everyone has a desire to do them, and even among those who do, not everyone has the same motive, not everyone is seeking the same experience. Likewise -- dare I say it -- Scientology probably has its positive aspects. That's not to say that it doesn't have negative aspects as well. I don't doubt that the kind of events that video implies may have happened could have happened, (I'd want to do more research before emphatically stating that they did), because these kind of things happen in every other group so why would Scientology... or Christianity... or Buddhism... or even, "shroomers" be exempt? Overall, I'm not in favor of cultish behavior or actions, but that is true whether it's being expressed in a religious group, a social club, a political organization, or any other place where humanity feels a need to gather. . -------------------- ~ Kindness is cheap. I find it so funny that people give such power to the word "Cult". It has been used improperly so much, that it has become slang. The word itself conjures up images of dark figures masked and hooded holding sacrificial daggers, chanting incessantly.
but here is a wiki and webster definition.
so basically, it is a small group of people detached from the mooing horde that is mainstream culture. so, basically, the shroomery can be considered a cult. Edited by psilocyberin (05/15/07 09:40 PM)

Sometimes "cult" is a way of saying -- there's a bunch of people over there and "we" think they're all a bunch of assholes. But that's a shallow perspective.
What's interesting to ponder is the normalacy of "cultish" behavior. To borrow on a theme, how many posts in "The Pub" contain the word "Nigga, Jew, Ho," etc? This is the ugly side of cultish behavior -- it's a means of saying, "I'm part of the in-group and you're part of the out-group. I'm special, and you're not. I've got the inside track and you don't". Republicans/Democrats; Whites/Blacks; Men/Women; Shroomers/Non-Shroomers; Islam/Christianity; Atheist/Devout -- these divisions capture our attention and keep us from asking the bigger questions: Where are we the same? What is the truest truth? Discernment is a tool and a sharp sword. Ask the bigger questions. Find the bigger answers. Learn from everyone. Follow no one. I agree. For fear of derailing threads in P&S I have refrained from telling people that their beliefs, or what they just posted, was very similar to the beliefs of Scientologists.
I would like to see more people seeing how they are similar rather than how they are better or different..... but that is a major flaw of the ego, we want to be unique.
