or maybe our circle is just an angrier bunch. i guess everyone's circle is different.

hippies party in cabins with no water or electricity on solstice celebrations. and get drunk on the homebrew and meads. yummmmmy. =)

though i do hate the ones who talk promote socialism. the weak should die. death shouldnt be feared.

I was joking, just the whole first post about "if you buy your weed we turn you away" stuff really seemed elitist.

My "hippie" friends and I used to sit around and smoke pot all day. it was pretty close to homelessness; none of us had jobs or duties, we'd hold outrageous parties (eventually the house was raided and hefty fines were issued), and most everything we did revolved around music. constant jamming & new "projects". I hate to say it but my hippie friends and I watched entirely too much tv, and hung out with a lot of young drunks. it made for a good crowd, but even while it was going on I had a good idea that drugs were the only glue holding us together.

now I try to do what I actually like. write, be quiet (for the most part. I left all my electrified instruments back home), and fall asleep in public parks. not much hippie about it.

It sucked. I don't ever want to have a "drug friend" again.

A few of them, I consider great close friends. I lived with a few of them, formed pretty tight bonds and understandings of each other. Most of them? If we don't have pot, we're not hanging out. Lame lame lame.

i don't know very much about hippies, except that they probably smelled a little and were good-hearted people, for the most part ... it really would be hard to define what a "real" hippie is, in my opinion, as they are just people of a lifestyle, as somebody else said in this thread ...

but here's the dictionary.com entry on "hippie":

hip·pie
–noun
1.  a person, esp. of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.

2.  A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.

Example: The farm cottage was bought by a group of young hippies; (also adjective) hippy clothes

I'd say hippies are against the status quo. That may include opposition to capitalism, but not always. I tend to think of myself as a hippie, mainly because I tend to get along best with that crowd, and I'm no more opposed to capitalism than I am to socialism. Between the two, I'd prefer capitalism, but I think there are more alternatives to the two than most people would have you believe.

Status quo even. What do hippies have against that?

I'm asking because I don't think there's anything really wrong with status quo. It doesn't mean anything and misrepresents who a person is more often than not. Status quo are easily cultivated. They also make business streamline so you don't have to know every single person you deal with personally.

I'm not for status quos either, but just because I don't believe in it or think it should be doesn't mean I won't have to deal with it. It's just another variable we're stuck with. Why not make it look good.

Someone with totally unrealistic ideals. I agree with some shit, but the majority of it is just mind pollution. The idea that humans are ever going to live in harmony is nice to think about, but its never going to happen. It goes against human nature. Then you have the vegans, the tree huggers, and the anti-science asshats, which are so unrealistic it isn't even worth talking about, if you don't know why it isn't worth my time to tell you. I don't like to use strawmen, but thats what most of the hippies that I've met online/offline, except for my friends that are more deadheads than hippies.
