HIPPIES.....are there any real hippies left??

are hippies just becoming into non-exsistence....i mean i run into alot of ppl who say they are "hippies" but they truly are not or at least not like the original hippies. does anybody agree with me on this?? i mean i know there has to be some out there where are u???

yeah their are real hippies...... The drug culture tore a good hole in the hippie movment. So did the drug war propeganda. Took the charm of peace love and unity and turned it into a drug induced fuck frenzy by the media.

I don't agree at all. I've met many 60-70year old heads as well as 20 year old hippies. The only thing that's changed is the bands and vehicles.

'hippie' is a very broad term.
seems to me that most who apply it to themselves are into the image and drugs without the ideals.
the music is still good though :thumbup:

Okay what the heck is with this hippie debate. Ive seen about 30 different threads all complaining about real hippies, fake hippies, imposter hippies.... Why do we care? I enjoy jam band music, I try and find larger truths, does that make me a hippie? I bet if i said I was a hippie 100 people would say "O no your a faker hippie, not a real hippie!", and I agree im probably not, but what is with the debate. Everyone is so concerned with being interpreted as a hippie. To me a hippie doesnt need to be recognized as a "hipie" for them to be happy. To me a hippie is someone who searches for truths for their own purposes, not for the purpose of telling everyone else about their actions. Ive seen people claim "O IM A HIPPY!!" well good for fucking you. I dont see why you see the need to claim it, its a lifestyle, not a badge to be worn and to be used as an excuse to use drugs. Its like religion. How many ppeople are actually catholic? Im sure thousands say " o yes im catholic" but how many of them actually abide by all the rules? They just use catholic as a badge to allow them to fit into a group. The true catholics dont see the need yto go around and parade their beliefes to everyone yelling "IM A CATHOLIC" as they walk dwn the street. The go about their lives doing what they believe god would want thme to, and that is what makes them truely a catholic. Just a though i had, agree to disagree.

im not tryin to badge anyone it is like u said more ppl make it a tread and thats what im gettin at im lookin for those who are just themselve and thats who they are society made the "hippy" title well im using it to generalize a similar personality i enjoy spendin my time with ppl who jam just sit around and jam to good music and talk about the most random things curiousty and all that. if i offended anyone that was not my intention and i didnt mean to brand anyone....and i believe there are "hippies" out there its just rare to find them. most ppl nowadays have alot of hate built up in them and i feel that it is overriding our love for one another and is settin us back rather than moving us forward. i really dont want any anger in this thread.

Are there people looking for unity, peace, love, and enlightenment in the same way there were in the 60s and 70s? I'd say yes, and most likely more of them than ever before, if anything. They're just less concentrated (no bohemian Haight-Ashbury these days) and less politically active. There's eco villages and communes all over the place, and rainbow gatherings every year.

What's missing is the actual belief amongst such people that they can change the world, since most of the people who previously tried that ended up getting shot.

i'm going to blatantly copy and paste my post from the news forum on this subject, with a little bit added...

I've been getting called a hippie a lot lately by people who have no idea what they are even saying. Not that the word even gets to me, but it's the laziness on the part of people who use it in a serious way.

By now the word can mean so many different things you might as well just not say it and take the extra effort to actually vocalize what you're trying to say without resorting to catchy labels.

Most people seem to think the word has to do with fashion, drugs, music and mindless rebellion. In many cases, they are right! Anyone can see that the world is fucked up, yet somehow buying into some culture of fads is a valid way of expressing your desire for change? Ya, right. The president would start wearing dreads and hemp pants if the powers that be thought it would keep things running smoothly.

The word has been around steeping in the media stew long enough that it's pure cliche. It's utterly useless unless you want to propagate systems of segregation.

I'd like to meet one fucking "hippie" that's read even a handful of the things I have, and who has done one minute of the serious introspection required in order to walk the path of true rebellion. Not that I think I'm smarter or better or more pure than anyone, but the truth is that SOO many people my age who are aware and somewhat rebellious and who are asking the big questions, are just being mislead and their energies being channeled into fucking fashion and bogus new age "answers"... The only thing that sets me apart is purely a matter of set and setting of one's upbringing and nothing to do with potential mental capacity.

I will be 24 in June. My generation has had very few REAL teachers in any position of authority where kids will go to them en masse and listen. There are plenty of intellectuals with nice cars and who have read lots of mysticism teaching in universities, but what do they know when it comes to the true spirit of rebellion? They are paying off a mortgage and a new Saab. We have to be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to meet someone that can actually help inspire us to effectively make use of our rebellious spirit.

I'm not saying that really paradigm shifting inspiration can't come from behind a podium at a big institution, but it is a rare exception.

What do I mean by 'true rebellion' anyway? Is my head that far up my own ass?
Well to give you an idea I'll list some things that are often done in the spirit of rebellion, but are actually just another aspect of the whole system.

NOT Rebellious:
Following jam bands around.
Buying cool clothes made by wage slaves.
Smoking crappy weed smuggled by the mob.
Voting for a democrat or third party.
etc...

If you want to really rebel, it takes some serious effort and will basically turn your life completely upsidedown, which means no more big budget concerts, no more shitty weed, no more fashion and no more 7-11 munchies. How many are willing to give that up?

Furthermore..
Just because someone sees the ills of society, it doesn't mean they themselves are some kind of saint. All to often counter culture types will fall into this trap of thinking they are right when everyone else is wrong. Some people I've met (who would be described by a lazy person as "hippies") are just as arrogant and stuck in their ego-obsessed ways as those onto whom they project their blame for the problems of the world.

Yeah, anger forces me to draw verbal lines in the sand. It feels good to let it out. Take it or leave it. I'm not going to split any long dirty hairs (of which I have plenty) over this, as it's just my opinion.

You must not know the same hippies that I know. People put in incredible amounts of volunteer time to run things like the Oregon Country Fair and barter faires. Sure there is capitolism involved in these events too, but there are many who toil long and hard, for free to keep these kind of free minded gatherings happening.
