Also, any mushroom which grows off of underground mycelium is obviously in total darkness for those first few critical days when it is 'born' and grows into a shroom big enough to break the soil.

Although I only grow legal types of mushrooms now and I use a regular old fluroscent, I grew the PF strain for almost 2 years without a light inside a black rubbermaid container. My shrooms grew in every direction and often straight down into the perilite, which caused a few problems but not all that many. Some light will add extra heat, which may or may not be bad.

But I would say no, because I have done it, but I will add the only strain I ever grew without a light was the PF strain.

Since I really don't want my shrooms to grow underground (in cake) I guess i'll use light.

My question now is what type of light and for how long each day? If I grew them in my closet and opened the door for so long each day would that be good enough?
