Erowid Donation.
    #6896636 -

A lot of you have, like myself have probably noticed that Erowid is often begging for donations to keep their site up and running. I don't need to start listing the virtues of Erowid as that would be rhetorical.

I had a couple of ideas on how the shroomery commuity could help out.

1: A one off donation by the Shroomery of a small percentage of one months profit.

2: A donation drive utilising a site wide sticky and something like a paypal account.

No, Erowid aren't giving me free drugs to post this idea, I just thought it would be a nice gesture to give something back to a resource that we have all used at one point or another.

Please Consider.

A one of donation by the Shroomery of a small percentage of one months profit.

I think Erowid is a for-profit site.

Maybe you should have checked?

Quote:
Funding & Support
Erowid operates in the style of public radio or television, supported by the donations of our visitors. The site is a service project, intended to change the nature of publicly available information about psychoactives.

One of the strengths of the Erowid Project is our long-term consistency. Visitors need to be able to rely on the library to be available (not just now, but next year and the year after that), active (with corrections and feedback being handled quickly), and up-to-date. We now serve information to more than 30,000 unique visitors each day, more than 8 million each year. With this tremendous interest, we need a core staff of skilled, knowledgable and reliable editors working on the project on a daily basis.

Because of the controversial nature of the site, we rely on the contributions of individuals and organizations who support our goals. We do not share the prohibitionist view that the population can't be trusted with accurate and specific information about the use of psychoactives. Because of this, government funding grants are generally unavailable to us. Instead, we ask for the support of those who believe in free access to this type of information.

Donations and membership dues are used to cover costs and maintain, update, and expand the data available in the online library. We are in the process of forming a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, but at this time, donations made to Erowid are not tax-deductible.

That would have taken you less time to find than the reply you made.

I like the idea of a joint Shroomery donation very much...my only problem is I don't use PayPal.

I also think a funding drive to put in a donation to MAPS would be a great thing to do. I'm already a donating member but I'd donate again in the Shroomery's name.

It sounds like a nice idea to include an option on the supporter account for (+$5 to Erowid) or what have you, but unless you make two payments on that order, we're going to be incurring additional accounting for having to channel funds through our account and on to Erowid's. Once I consider this, it seems like people should just take the time to donate directly to Erowid by [visiting their donation page]. That way the buyer can even score a subscription to Erowid's printed newsletter, t-shirts, and other various wares. I'm all for supporting Erowid, but I'm also for stringent efficiency! A Shroomery orchestrated raffle sounds like a better, and more fun, idea.

Yeah I'm with geo, Erowid is a much larger site than we are and they're capable of handling their own fund raising. Not to mention there are plenty of other good causes out there which also need support. In theory I think everyone should just decide which issues are most important to them and then donate independently. But maybe by organizing an official Shroomery charity drive we could encourage more people to take action. I'd be in favor of something like a public poll to decide on one or two charities, and then a month where all revenue from supporter accounts is donated. That'd keep things simple for us and for people who wish to contribute.

why not get together with erowid (directed towards admins) and work something out where we can donate as a community and in return they hook us up with a banner or something? or maybe even just a link on their page (i dont recall seeing one on there)

a) we give back to one of the most reliable sources on the web.
 also increases traffic for this site

just a thought.

a donation is a donation.. i was just thinking maybe if we came up with a quite noticeable donation, which im sure could be worked out with enough support, maybe they would do something for us in return.

That sentence has been there for at least three years. What does that tell you?

I'm not saying that someone's getting rich, but unless I'm missing something, Erowid is fairly static except for volunteer submitted trip reports. Their biggest expense is probably bandwidth. Also, the fact that they don't publish a financial statement means neither your nor I can know for sure what happens with their donations other than that they are definitely NOT a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, at least not yet.

Again, I'm not saying you shouldn't donate, but without a financial statement, you can't know for sure what exactly you're donating to.

Becoming a 501(c)(3) is an incredibly arduous, expensive process to go through.  I'm not saying it should take 3 years of continued effort, but it's not as simple as filling out a sheet of paper.  Most places simply give up trying to become one because it's such a pain in the ass

Becoming a 501(c)(3) is an incredibly arduous, expensive process to go through.

Nope.

I did it for a group I served as treasurer for by filling out a few forms with no lawyer or accountant, and I know nothing about law or accounting.

BTW, I looked around on Erowid a little more. Turns out they have three full time employees: the two founders and one more person to help.

Then I looked at their What's New page.

Guess what? Since April 10th, they've added an average of two user submitted trip report pages per day, that's it. It takes THREE full time employees to copy/paste and touch up two web pages per day?? I don't think so.

Erowid is a cushy steady income for the two founders and someone else. Not that I fault them for that. They had the original idea, own the domain, and do provide a library of information even if it is mostly trip reports. They have the right to live off the donations if that's what they want.

All I'm saying is that if you're going to give someone money, you should know where it's going instead of just blindly sending it because it's an anti-establishment web site.

As for my five bucks, I'll send it to NORML where I know it's doing some good.

I'm not anti-idea. I'm pro-complete-disclosure. I don't think it's a good idea giving money to an organization unless you know what's up.

And at the risk of repeating myself, I'm not saying you shouldn't donate to Erowid. They may well be a worthwhile organization to donate to, but they claim to be non-profit don't publish a financial statement. All I'm saying is that if you ARE going to donate, it behooves you to know where that money is going. That's all.

So, now that I've answered your question, lemme ask you something: do you think it takes three full time employees to post 10 trip reports per day?

Actually, I do.

Busy is not a function of traffic, that's handled by a machine; busy is a function of how dynamic a site is. Shroomery is constantly being improved and changed. It has many components including IRC, PM, Email, advertisers, forums, lots and lots of user interaction, and so on.

Other than trip reports, Erowid is a mostly-static collection of information.

How busy would Ythan be if Shroomery consisted of the FAQ and 10 trip reports per day?

Unlike the Shroomery, where anyone can upload a trip report either to the wiki or to the Trip Reports forum...you don't seem to realize that the Erowid employees actually read every single trip report submitted, and decide which ones they think are worth their time. So while we let trip reports like "omg i did 3g of mushrooms and my parents were downstairs i could hear them laughing it was fukking crazy!!!! lol" just stand as they are, Erowid doesn't let everything go up because they want to encourage responsible drug usage...

So is erowid. It is constantly being improved and changed. See http://www.erowid.org/general/about/about_article5.shtml and
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.erowid.org if you don't believe me.

I mean they explain it nicely on their website what the money is needed for
http://www.erowid.org/general/about/about_faq.shtml#funding

Quote:
The upkeep and development of Erowid is a 4+ person job. In fact we could easily use a dozen people working full-time on the site to keep up with the required updates, submissions, responses, and addition of new material. Three full-time employees are an absolute minimum to manage the volunteers who work on the site, keep the review processes for new content moving ahead, and keep the systems functioning. Funding is needed to support these person-hours as well as to buy hardware and software used in the development of the site and to cover other direct expenses such as scanning and copying costs, office supplies, and reference materials. Happily, as of January 1998, the main server has been generously hosted by Hyperreal at no cost. Further, hundreds of hours per year of system administration are donated per year. Erowid also requires additional back-end servers for backups, upkeep, and administrative functions that currently cost us about $3,000 per year.

Knowing which resources go into keeping the Shroomery up I have no reason to doubt them.

I disagree.

Sure, the Shroomery is a spot where you can find alot of information about various drugs, as is Erowid. But thats about where the similarity ends...

When I hear about some strange new RC, or some plant I haven't heard of before, I dont do a forum search here to see what it is. I go and see if Erowid has a vault for it.

The two are totally different beasts. The Shroomery is a great reference for Mushrooms and the Psychedelic Experience as well as a community sounding board, but Erowid is like a Physician's Desk Reference for psychedelics.

I would love to see a vote to donate a little bit of $$ to a site that I'm sure we all use, or have used at sometime in the past.

NORML isn't all its cracked up to be. The MPP did a lot more during the last polls from what I understand. The Nevada (http://www.regulatemarijuana.org/) and Alaska (http://www.regulatemarijuanainalaska.org/home/) initiatives among others were both pushed by the MPP.
