Making Mead

After hearing a lot about mead from a student of mine (I teach guitar), I have decided that I am going to start making some.  A really good website with tons of info can be found here (Check out the "Newbee" guide in the "making mead" section for a pretty thorough overview of the process).  I plan on starting within the next week or two and am getting pretty stoked.  I have never tried it, so I am going to start with a small batch and see how it goes. 

I don't really have any questions, but if anyone has any tips, that would be most welcome.

i hung out with some pagans who made tons of that stuff. mango mead and honey mead are excellent. good luck and remember to share!

I imagine that student as fairly young; looking for any thing
to get them drunk; in my mind. I might be way off base; I just figure
fermented sugar water is the place someone like that might turn to.
maybe he just likes the taste of mead who knows. boiled kool-aid wine
is prob. more complex..brewed by minors and inmates. My powers
of perception are leaning towards noob-student on this one. Booze
and stupid people are a bad combo. Yur supposed to be a role-model
for cool. If their taking lessons from you they look up to you.
I knew a guy (30+ yrs old)who died from alcohol withdrawal because
he didnt have $ for beer. alcohol withdrawal is more deadly than any other withdrawal,and the most common.
I drink on occasion, but I could go the rest of my life without it.
I dont count how long its been; but Im guessing I go yrs. without
booze since I dont care about it. Boozing is for people without pot.
Pot is way less addictive than booze; the withdrawal symptoms aren`t
deadly. no hangover. no puking. It impairs your driving and judgement
much less. Pot is a good alternative to getting fucked up all around.
Pot is less likely to destroy your life.
Hate to be a "buzz kill" but welcome to reality where your actions
have consequences that can be deadly and life destroying. I`m the coolest person I know and none of it can be attributed to getting
fucked up on anything. Drinking to get fucked up is stupid; and makes
you not cool. Thats what I`d say to anyone I suspected of looking
to booze to get messed up. People respect my life experience to
know that Im not just being a nancy reagan on them.

Good mead is a connoisseur's product, much like that of good wine, and I love wine.  :smile:

I've made mead twice... both times were just practice runs. Since honey is so expensive, I used far too little for real mead... just so I could practice the whole process of brewing it from start to finish. Needless to say the resulting stuff wasn't even worthy of being used as a solvent.

Now, I have a 5 gallon fermentation chamber, 3 kinds of brewing yeast, and an uncle who can get me 15 pounds of honey for less than $40 (that's enough for 5 gallons of dry mead,). All I need to do is buy some no-rinse sterilizer and the honey, and then get started!

Sounds like you've already got the honey source, otherwise some health food stores will sell in bulk.  The one near has it on tap, I filled a five gallon construction pale for ~$20USD. :cool:

I made some Elderberry mead that turned out really well, and I'll take a nip or two for when I have a cold.

Be warned, the mead hangover can be one of the ugliest.

Pick up the book, Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers: The Secrets of Ancient Fermentation (Paperback).It has alot of good info on mead,honey and hive products.Here is a good place to get all kinds of honey from Glorybeefoods.com
