Mead anyone?
    #4649322 - 09/12/05 09:45 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

So I finally got to try mead yesterday. I've been curious about it for a long time, and was nicely surprised to find two meaderies at a wine fest yesterday. It's quite delicious, almost like white grape wine mixed with honey. At least for the unflavored version I opened. I also got pinapple.

I'm having a bit right now, and it's 9:45 in the morning! I also have class in an hour & a half. Am I becoming a meadaholic? I think so. (for those actually concerned, I only had about 2 oz., I couldn't wait to taste it again)

I'm not sure whether to leave it in the fridge to chill it (my preference for wine) or leave it room tempeture.

Mead is seriously underappericated. I'll probably end up trying another variety from the Long Island Meadery, "Root Beer" (they have a website, if you want to check it out, just do a search). It hasn't been completed yet.

So raise your goblet to a viking's dose of mead!

is it real mead, or some bastardized american version of it?

real mead (ie home-made by norwegian farmers) is horrible stuff, in my opinion... but they seem to like it.

Well it's hard for me to say, but it does taste like mead sounds like it would taste like. Is there a way to tell if it's bastardized or not?

Isn't mead just an alcoholic beverage where most of the food source for the bacteria was honey? I thought it would just be really thick and really sweet... cuz if it wasn't sweet the alcohol level would have to be off the charts (you would think).

The mead I have right now is sweet, but it's not thick like honey whatsoever. Same color, simular taste, but with alcohol . It's much less sweet than a dessert wine, and there are even dry varities. I got the semi-sweet, as I don't like dry wine that much.

Local wine festival. You can purchase it from www.limeadery.com or www.montezumawinery.com/mtz_order.taf (look for "honey wine").
