Does anyone here make wine or mead? How experienced are you? What is some good advice for a beginner? Good recipes?
I found a supply store 2 min from my house,so tonight im going to buy my equipment, and a starter kit, and get a nice batch of red started. After that i want to make mead, but am somewhat confused as it is such bullshit on the web. People are trying to rip you off left right and center and its hard to know a good honey source, prices and such.
Basically i just want to talk bout mead...and wine.

I know howto make some jug wine that probably would have given me some weird side effects if I drank the whole thing.

I made one big jug.. but during the fermintation process oxygen kept getting to it.. so it took alot longer to ferment than usual.. and it smelled not like usual wine.. So I was afraid to drink it all. I still have a bunch of wine yeast somewhere so I might make some more in the future.

I can recommend a couple good books to get you started. Mad About Mead! by Pamela Spence gives a quite thorough tutorial on how to start making quality mead, takes you through all the equipment, selecting ingredients, etc., and includes some good recipes. I also really like Harold Buhner's book Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers for some more interesting recipes and mythological background.
Most areas have homebrewing societies which are good sources of information on local suppliers. You might also ask at the wine shop; they might be able to point you in the right direction, since many winemakers also make mead.

I used to make wine many years (15 or so) ago. It is a pretty easy and fun hobby, but it takes a long time before you get any payoff. The worst wine I ever made was onion wine. My favorites were mead and mango wine.
Although I enjoyed drinking the wines more, it sucks to wait a year and a half before they are drinkable. Brewing beer is fun also, and you get to drink you work much sooner.

This only happens if you drink methanol instead of ethanol. Methonal is produced when wood ferments. Ethanol is produced when sugar ferments.

Right, so last night i made my way to the wine wizards...a local winery store not two minutes from my house!...I went in and told the old guy working there about my latest hobby, and he immediatly offered the "kit" which has all my equipment for $40. So as he's getting everything, he starts asking if i know about this, and do i know how to read that...and i say i have absolutely no idea!...So for the next 45 minutes he went through pretty much the entire process with me. He makes wine too for real cheap, so i got to see his setup, and he told me lots of tips where people commonly go wrong. Well we got everything, and a winemaking kit with a recipe book, and we went home to brew.
We were cleaning everything, but i had forgotten the fermenter lid, so when i called he remembered me and seemed sorry for "him" not remembering "our" lid...i told him no problem, and got the lid...he then put me on the special customer list which gets good deals on juice and grapes as he occasionally gets special offers. A great store.
And then we finished up the batch and put it in the fermenter...i'll check it in 6 days.

That would be great if you could find time to post some good recipes!
