How many of you are actually philosophy majors?
    #6827711 -

It seems that topics (and replies) here are not all too often philosophical (but more so spiritual/mystical/theological), though I do at times stumble upon posts containing intricate philosophical knowledge.

I am asking because I'd like to know personally who actually actively partakes in philosophy for future reference in case I'd like to chat on a particular subject or if I have any particular questions.

im not, but seeing as im not, whats the difference between a spiritual/mystical/theological idea and a philosophical one? i can take my guesses, because some parts are obvious, but id like to hear what somone who knows has to say.

I'm currently double majoring in philosophy and behavioural neuroscience. However, I go to a small, private, catholic school in Iowa... I doubt any of my instructors will support the idea of psychedelics involved with psychology or any other spirituality other than catholism.

My definition is irrelevant concerning the context of my original post; rather academia's definition is what is necessary since it determines the scope of my philosophical inquiry. Appealing to such a definition, philosophy is thought as of the discipline concerned with the questions of ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and logic (whose job is to typically shed light on what are the correct principles of reasoning)

An example of a crude difference, for example, would be the typical differences in the nature of the investigation of God found in metaphysics vs. theology. Here, the object in question is the same but methodology varies.

And how do you balance all of that with the idea of philosophy?

Presently I'm still a senior in high school, but next year in college I'll be double majoring in psychology and philosophy.

I was going to major in philosophy, so I took some courses, but have since changed my mind.

What does philosophy have to do with psychedelics?

I have taken a few philo classes, but it seemed that the professors couldn't let go of their preference and bias regarding certain philosophies, which equates into shunning or shortcutting around debating equally valid philosophies for others.

Where one professor really liked existentialism and wow'd the kids with the infinite possibilities and its possible ramifications, as well as dismissing anothers argument with anothers writings..... he would dislike nihilism and exclude a large amount of discussion by preemptively dismissing a majority of arguments for and against.

kind of like having a very liberal teacher who would give a sheet of listed facts regarding the World Wars, but spent a few days opening up discussion on the Vietnam War and how it parallels our current war.

I have learned more by reading and posting in this forum than i had in my philo classes, textbook examples and hypotheticals are great for testing and such, but real world interaction, application, and discussion (and sometimes even the semantic arguments) are much more intrinsically cognitive.

Exactly my point regarding Catholicism and excluding other concepts

There have been plenty of incredibly important Christian philosophers.

Saint Thomas Aquinas should be the most obvious.

Gottfried Leibniz too.

George Berkeley was a Bishop.

The list goes on.

That's unfortunate. For philosophy, the university is very important. Where were you attending?

I disagree. Most topics pertain to both, and the philosophy exists more as one's personal philosophy and outlook on life and of reality. While I can understand the knowledge and opportunity that lies within formally studying the practice of philosophy and its history, I think the notion that we aren't discussing philosophy unless we are specifically discussing knowledge obtained through formal study of it from an academic point of view is foolish.

Looking at the front page right now, the majority of threads are not philosophy in the sense of the word I was taught. I am under the impression that the inquiry of philosophy is based upon reason, striving to make no unexamined assumptions. This is what demarcates philosophy. They just seem to me to be a little more spiritual in nature. It was just a mere observation, you are free to disagree.

I may be biased, but I share the view that others have (such as Aristotle, Plato, etc.) that stresses the importance of academia in philosophical investigation. I see it as an essential component. It provides a particular setting that can not be emulated in any other way. Once again, you are free to disagree. All this is totally irrelevant to my original question on who finding out who is a philosophy major.

Rather, it was merely an observation, I am free to examine your assumptions in order to produce philosophical discussion. Clearly a lot of the ideas involve spirituality, yet the manner in which we approach discussing them is usually that of philosophical inquiry. Reason is evident within a lot of ideas and discussions here.

It might provide a particular setting that cannot be emulated through any other means, but to think that formal philosophical study has the corner on the philosophical market is ridiculuous. People develop their own philosophy, through experience of reality and through discussing ideas. Its no surprise that spirituality is incorporated into this as well.

This is no different than the academic study of music. Clearly it is not necessary to write, learn, and perform amazing music.

So what? Someone who is deeply interested in philosophy would embrace the opportunity of having their assumptions examined. This is what this forum is here for. The ideas that you outline are open for discussion, regardless of one question that you had the intention of receiving the answers for. I apologize if this post did not meet your expectations and demands of what was to be said in this thread. :smirk:

My pointing out of irrelevancy is due to the fact that I, at the moment, do not have time to debate/discuss philosophy. I'm writing an essay on Chomsky's review of Skinner's Verbal Behavior. The reason I made this thread is due to the fact that I have another essay assigned on Heidegger's Being and Time, a book I am somewhat confused with. I was hoping to find someone to help clear my confusion in the near future.

Hey spud,

I got a bachelor's in philosophy and did a year of Ph.D. study as well before calling it quits in academia (for the time being anyway). I'm planning on going back (after I get myself out of the mountain of debt that I put myself in while I was in grad school) to get a degree in theology.

I'm pretty much a lurker here on the Shroomery; I think there's a lot of good conversation here, but generally just don't have enough time to participate actively. Nevertheless, feel free to shoot me a PM either with questions or to point me to threads on the board. For what it's worth, it was my frustration with the limits on what can be said under the guise of "pure" philosophy that eventually drove me out of it, so even with my formal training I can't make any guarantees that there won't be any forays on my part into the mystical/spiritual/theological. By the way, I took a stab at your question on Quine, psychology and epistemology; take a look and let me know what you think!
