christianity and philosophy
    #1797764 - 08/10/03 11:45 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

christianity is a religion of history (and perhaps morality), not philosophy.

christians are supposed to believe that certain events happened, and that a certain way is the right way to live, but there's not much as far as questioning and understanding our true nature and the nature of reality.

the philosophy that can be dug up in christian teaching isn't that of christ... it's plato, and a little socrates, injected by st. augustine into the christian faith.

the philosophical element of christianity is hardly christian at all. it's like they just adapted a certain philosophical outlook (the popular one of the day in the region they were spreading the faith to) and made it official church doctrine.

i do think that this stunted philosophical development in europe for centuries... no one could really go against the church's (st. augustine's) philosophical understanding. when you read any european philosophy of the day, it's almost painful to see the extent to which philosophers didn't introduce any new ideas contrary to the old ones, and how questioning God was unthinkable.

That is an interesting take on it for sure. But the historical fact is the much of Christian doctrine was based on St. Thomas Aquinas' interpretation of Aristotle.

The failure of the philosophic enterprise started with the teachers of philosophy in the Dark Ages who taught it as (and Sclorch will like this) dogma. From that we inherited whole systems from the 1600's on down starting with Bacon that are completely offbase.

For example, how can the Idealists dialogue with the Realists? The problem is, they can't. This is because you have to agree on some basic concepts in order to proceed.

In sum, philosophy today is a mess.

philosophy is in everything and thus it is christianity to. There is no religion that doesn't shelter philophy in it's shelves for the understanding of the human energy flow. Incomplete writings lead to misunderstanding of things and would be useless and tossed out.

peace

From that we inherited whole systems from the 1600's on down starting with Bacon...

(Which brings us to the W.O.D.) ... and ending with eggs and two strips of Bacon: "This is your brain on drugs..."

Coincidence or...?

could you elaborate on this a bit?

The ultimate meaning of our being can only be fulfilled in the paradoxical leap beyond the tragic-demonic frustration. It is a leap from our side, but it is the self-surrendering presence of the Ground of Being from the other side.
