Philosophy Books - I wanna read one!
    #1355246 - 03/06/03 02:39 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, I want to read an interesting philosophy book.

Being that I am posting this on the SHROOMERY, then yeah, I would like something that is maybe kinda spiritual, but definitely nothing too political.

I was thinking maybe Jung, maybe Nietzche. But I don't know!

Who are some interesting philosophers, why, and what books by them?

I just started reading Peter D. Ouspensky's "The Fourth Way" and I gotta give it a big thumbs up from what I've gotten through so far. There are some really interesting things in the book concerning consciousness and how we're essentially 'asleep at the wheel' of our lives. This book is not political at all; the best way to describe it would be a study of psychology connected with the realm of spirituality.

I would recommend " The Story of Philosophy" by Will Durant. It is an engaging and readable introduction to Western Philosophy, though not complete, it makes for a good starting point.

here are some excellent books

Total Freedom by J. Krishnamurti - A life changing book for me.
Food of The Gods by Terence McKenna - how apes evolved into humans by eating psychadelic mushrooms! (any McKenna book will blow your mind)
Philosophy and Matrix - if you liked the movie then this will be a great read.

and if you don't like any of those, be sure to pick up The Mind's I - tackles many different subjects such as artificial intelligence, reductionism vs holism, and lots more. Very interesting read. hope that helps.

I agree, especially "Food of the Gods" by Mckenna. If you haven't read that one try it out, very well written and enjoyable, it's a must.

I am currently enrolled in philosophy...unfortunatly it primarily revolves around ethics... :frown:

Would be cool to learn some more spirtual oriented philosophy though.  I'm intrested in Shinto and Buddhism.

You'll hear a lot of bullshit answers for this question. I was pleasantly surprised to see "The History of Philosophy" mentioned. It is a good book.

You want a real philosophy book? One that is easy to understand and points out all the major errors in philosophy today?

Ten Philosophical Mistakes by Mortimer J. Adler

It doesn't get better than that.

Cheers,

I'd recommend Power vs Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior by Dr. David R. Hawkins.

Enjoy

I've heard Nietzche is a great place to start because he's easy to read. I reccommend "Beyond Good and Evil."

Edit: Also, I reccommend "The Simpsons and Philosophy." If you like the Simpsons, you'll love this.

I recommend you read Plato.
For example,  the Allegory of the cave .
Everyone should read this; makes me feel like Plato was a shroomer!
