What does we use oxygen for in the body?

And how is it used?


I just love anatomy, I wish I had a 'instant clone' of my self, that I could cut open and look around in... (The power of dreams gives me this ability though, I am just not sure that I can trust it. (Yet.))

Anyone care to 'enlighten' me on oxygen? I know iron is used to transport it around in the blood.

The mitochondria in your cells use the oxygen in making ATP, the energy source for your cells.

well, diffusion occurs at the alveli in your lungs bc the blood contains more CO2 than O2. so O2 goes down its concentration gradient into the blood, being that the membrane separating the alveoli from the blood is the thickness of ~1 cell.

This blood is now oxygenated and via pulmonary vein goes back to the heart where it'll go into the left atrium, then the left ventricle where is it pumped out to the systemic branches of the body via aorta.

In a nut shell, aorta turns into arteries > arterioles > capillaries and at the cappillaries is where the diffusion of O2 to and CO2 from your cells takes place.

The hemoglobin in our blood makes it possible to hold as much oxygen as we can. Iron plays some role but I believe is mostly due to why it's red. The hemoglobin is key. if we had sickle cell anemia then we'd have little to no hemoglobin and have a hard time holding oxygen.

There's one fish in the antarctic that has no hemoglobin, but in turn, its heart is bigger, pumps more blood, the water there has a higher concentration of oxygen because of its temperature and the cold water, in turn, lowers the metabolic rate to something attainably reasonble.

Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor for the ETC (electron transport chain).

More simply put, oxygen is required to process ATP which gives energy to all functions of the body.

It also replaces CO2. High concentrations of CO2 in your blood cause your blood pH to drop and can cause acidosis.
