Why so small?

So I have 4 casings that are all producing some smaller mushrooms.
Yesterday


Today

Substrate: Rye grain
Casing: MG MC with bullseye pH balance
Lighting: Fluoro 12+/12-
FAE: cool mist outside of FC and 3-5 fannings a day by hand
RH: 93-96%
Temp: 69-72
Strain: Ralphsters Hawaiians


Any suggestions to get them bigger? I took a break for a few years and am coming back into this hobby but I don't remember them being this small off of grain casings. Thanks for any help.

i dunno. it seems like you did everything right. sometimes you just get bad luck. mushrooms are pretty unpredictable sometimes =P.

if you are just casing grain then there ya go. spawn to a bulk substrate and your fruits will show a positive correlation to substrate depth

i like smaller mushrooms better. that's why i like puerto ricans. i never have liked it when i get a big fat mushroom.

Grains themselves just don't hold/give up moisture easily enough to support many/large fruits.

Some people have had incredible results fruiting from rye, but they usually case with COIR.  Well, if they use a deep casing layer, the coir acts a mini-bulk substrate.

I am going to burst a bubble of yours sorry :frown: The bullseye Ph balancer is pointless, it only lasts 2-3 days.. This was from the great Roger Rabbit himself, he tested it out. I would say switch to hydrated lime if you can get some..

yeah my next batch is with 50/50+ i just used MG MC because i didnt have the supplies at the time.

Also when I used to grow coir and verm were the big deal for casing layers so I'm trying to switch over to the 50/50.

yeah 50/50+ is where its at..

However MG MC is almost perfect.. You could probally safely never mix casing again and use that!

I was simply saying the PH balancer isn't to great, the MG MC is great!

Nother quick question while i have some front thread page attention.

The room I have the FC is around 69-72 degrees. 

Can I put the bulk spawn in this room to colonize?  I know you are not supposed to incubate it  in a TiT from past experience :frown:.

Yes you can, myc will colonize 60's-80's in temp. Just a bit slower is all.

This is directly inline with a question I wanted to post so instead I'll try hijacking this one...  :justdontknow:

I was wondering what the consequences of a shallow _casing_ over a coir substrate spawned from two brf cakes.  The substrate and spawn probably totaled a good 1.5 - 2.0 inches however the casing (ph balanced jiffy mix) was very thin at only maybe an 1/8th inch.

I grossly miscalculated the requirements for the second two trays that finished late when pasteurizing and I made about 1/2 pint too little after over compensating for having made about two pints too much the first time.  :grin:

How and why is this less than the more optimal 0.5 - 1.0 inches deep?
