I should probably stop being ADHD and put all my "votes" in one post, but I somehow almost forgot Bjork, Dave Grohl and a bit off the beaten path you have people like Harry Chapin, Ani Difranco, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Jesse Cook.. tons of amazingly talented singers, songwriters and over-all musicians that don't even register on the pulp grind of top40 tripe.

One more gripe, I don't really think the message you send through your music really has anything to do with musicianship. I mean, Operation Ivy has some great lyrics in my opinion, but I wouldn't even put them close to being good musicians.

Look I just wanted some answers to the question in the title. I just listed some criteria for answering that question. Your answers are legit.

I dunno about that. I have seen some amazing musicians (speaking of a technical skill/ability) that have very little passion and almost nothing to say.

Yeah and I listen to predominantly jazz, and they don't really have jack shit to say. Because it's instrumental. I'm just saying that message doesn't play a role in musicianship. It is definitely important to me in other aspects of music as a whole, but not a figure of the equation of musicianship.

And Ubermensch, I wasn't saying that anyone was trying to downplay my guys or anything, just simply stating that I don't know if I could agree with all of your criteria, that's all.

The point I'm trying to make is that it takes talent to write/perform music that sounds good, but even more talent to write/perform music that sounds good and has a message that many consider to be meaningful.

You don't think a message can be conveyed without lyrics? You're listening to the wrong kind of jazz if that's the case.

Whoa whoa whoa, you obviously didn't read who my artists were.

What jazz do you listen to where a "message" is sent. You can play something and convey emotion, but I'm not going to get messages from a piece unless I'm told beforehand what it means.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't question who I listen to, because if you don't know any of those names then you have no right to do it.

The term "generation" is so loaded that I would never use it. Having stated that, I cannot answer your question.

One of the greatest musical artists that are contemporary to myself would be Tool. In Flames, Opeth, Borknagar... this question ultimately reduces down to "who is your favorite artist that has been active in your life-time?".

I disagree, I am completely able to separate who are my favorite artists from who are the better artists.

For example I enjoy listening to Bane (I used to listen to a lot more hardcore), but I can understand that they are not nearly as close to the level or musical ability of other stuff that I listen to less.

I'm not saying that, though, but was basically implying that the term "generation" is so broad and people's tastes in music lie acrossed a huge spectrum, to the point that I personally wouldn't propose that some rapper is the greatest musical artist of our generation because I just don't get into it.

I mean, I'm capable of discerning the difference between musicians in genres that I do not dig that have talent and those who do not, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Actually I didn't see your earlier post with your "nominations". Regardless, you are really, really touchy about this subject.. which confuses me because I don't understand why people get outraged when other people don't worship at the same altars of fandom.

In other words, chill out.

Seemed to me you were attacking what I need listen to without reason. I could care less if people do or do not like what I like, but to tell me I'm listening to the wrong jazz I find offensive.

I am chilled out, you seemingly attacked what I liked, I felt the need to defend myself. That is all.

I still ask for you to point me in the direction where non-vocal jazz sends a "message". Frankly I don't think there is any out there, maybe I'm way off base though.

You haven't heard a single good suggestion?
And then you suggest Billy Corgan?
Don't get me wrong I like their stuff and he's good, but what separates him from what other people have suggested, if you don't mind me asking.
