You are going the wrong way. Most new "country" is just redneck "rock - n - roll". GOOD country is Hank Jr, DaCoe, etc. Willie nelson is country

I like older country (artists stated above) and newer alt. country (some Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Blue Rodeo, Neko Case, etc.) I also have a fond spot for bluegrass and its variations (even though as stated earlier country is just a variation of bluegrass).
