Greatest musical artist of our generation?
    #6624966 -

My roommate just claimed eminem as the holder of this title. I don't really care for his music, but I recognize that he is a talented writer/producer/entertainer, but there are more factors in the equation imo.
Consider the following:
-writing
-singing (not rapping) ability
-dancing ability
-instrumental talent (which slim shady lacks)
-ability to entertain a crowd
-message of the music produced

Your vote(s) please!

Wynton Marsalis
Roy Hargrove
Joshua Redman
Chris Potter

No doubt those are the top four in my mind.

The title says "musical artist". What I'm getting at here is musician + artist. Sorry for the confusion but I just wanted the whole package.

Oh and though I'm not sure I'd qualify him as the greatest of our generation, Marilyn Manson has no small skill at putting together one hell of a show. The music, the presentation and above all the lyrics are surprisingly good. For a comparative metaphor, you might consider him Eminem's dark shadow. Totally different approach but a similar level of passion, ability and fearlessness.

Gah one other thing, I think it should be "singing/instrumental talent", all the dudes I named play instruments and don't sing, some might have perfect pitch but they still aren't singers, but if you disagree that they are some of the best (or best in my opinion) musicians in this and any generation you're just crazy.

Although I don't like him so much anymore, I would suggest Jonathan Davis.
Most of the older korn song were his written, so he can write pretty good, also he has quite unique singing style as well. He can dance also if you can call twisting dancing. Also he knows how to play many instruments, (he's father had musical instrument store when he was little, so he just took an instrument and learned it and so on...) also he knows a lot about electronic music.

Yeah and I listen to predominantly jazz, and they don't really have jack shit to say. Because it's instrumental. I'm just saying that message doesn't play a role in musicianship. It is definitely important to me in other aspects of music as a whole, but not a figure of the equation of musicianship.

And Ubermensch, I wasn't saying that anyone was trying to downplay my guys or anything, just simply stating that I don't know if I could agree with all of your criteria, that's all.

The point I'm trying to make is that it takes talent to write/perform music that sounds good, but even more talent to write/perform music that sounds good and has a message that many consider to be meaningful.

You don't think a message can be conveyed without lyrics? You're listening to the wrong kind of jazz if that's the case.

What jazz do you listen to where a "message" is sent. You can play something and convey emotion, but I'm not going to get messages from a piece unless I'm told beforehand what it means.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't question who I listen to, because if you don't know any of those names then you have no right to do it.

I disagree, I am completely able to separate who are my favorite artists from who are the better artists.

For example I enjoy listening to Bane (I used to listen to a lot more hardcore), but I can understand that they are not nearly as close to the level or musical ability of other stuff that I listen to less.

I'm not saying that, though, but was basically implying that the term "generation" is so broad and people's tastes in music lie acrossed a huge spectrum, to the point that I personally wouldn't propose that some rapper is the greatest musical artist of our generation because I just don't get into it.

I mean, I'm capable of discerning the difference between musicians in genres that I do not dig that have talent and those who do not, but that's not what I'm talking about.

*shrug* The intensity and creativity of some of the "classics" (Davis, Coltrane, Ellington, etc) conveys a lot, I think. The cool thing about it though is that it's in such a raw format that it's partly up to the listener to decide what it means. The music will meet you half way. Or another way of looking at it is that good jazz will convey emotions, but not necessarily the context or specifics of it. Many other lesser knowns (such as some of the ones you listed) accomplish this readily as well.

oh and speaking of jazz and in reference to the OP, Nina Simone is primo.

edit to add: Forgot the main point I was going to make: I wasn't attacking you, I was just surprised that someone who seems to be really into jazz would insinuate that it has no message or that without lyrics there is nothing being communicated. Jazz, of all genres, excels at non-verbal, musical dialogue between the artist and the listener.

I don't mean that nothing is conveyed. But I'm looking at it as a message in the sense that it has some meaning beyond what emotions it's going to strike and where those emotions will take you and what they make you think. Like, an anti-war message, or racists are bad messages aren't going to be directly sent through the music I don't think. They can certainly be interpreted, but I don't think jazz musicians write pieces or play solos with a certain meaning in mind. Maybe their current emotions will influence where they go with a song, but I don't know if their goal at the end of the day is to tell their audience "war is bad". If that makes sense.

And oh, those four artists are far from "lesser knowns", they might not be big to people outside of jazz, but that's because jazz is so unknown, and people don't seem to gain fame outside of the genre until after their careers have peaked. Although Wynton is kinda famous, he makes millions of dollars and has been featured even on SportsCenter (he's from New Orleans.)

Moshic maybe not the greatest but on the top of the list in my opinion.
But I'm sure many of you wont agree as its electronic music.

So they have to be a good writer, a good singer, a good dancer, and play an instrument really well....

Like everyone else, I'll toss some meaningless answers out to this meaningless question:

  • Radiohead
  • Soundgarden
  • Nirvana

And what's all this talk about bands not being artists?  :bored:

The term "generation" is so loaded that I would never use it. Having stated that, I cannot answer your question.

this is such an apples and oranges question.

I know what kind of question. This is just another one of those threads where you post who/what/where you think is best and why.

JT is still pretty good, he's not as mainstream pop boyband bitchish anymore.

If you have to say  "he's not AS"... then he still IS.  IMO he produces pop trash that will be a flash in the pan.  Of course, to each his own.

I'll have to go with fireworks_god and psilocyberin on this one.  If I was forced to pick a band that I'll go with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.  Again, apples to cows.  Way too many people deserving and 'generation' is too vague.  I don't know how you can put the title of Best on anyone in regards to music.  IMHO the Flecktones  are deserving of some accolade.

Remember the thread asked about Musical ARTISTS, not Industry puppets.

This sort of shit is usually found in Q, NME and Kerrang, not a quality publication like the Shroomery!

My roommate just claimed eminem as the holder of this title. I don't really care for his music, but I recognize that he is a talented writer/producer/entertainer, but there are more factors in the equation imo.
Consider the following:
-writing
-singing (not rapping) ability
-dancing ability
-instrumental talent (which slim shady lacks)
-ability to entertain a crowd
-message of the music produced

Your vote(s) please!

Is this a joke?  Clearly the title goes to wesley willis!

come on... this isn't an esoteric competition.

I like mr Coyne as much as the next guy but he can't sing for shit and while Yoshimi was a fantastic album, every single song is in the key of Cmaj or min.
Complexity is not the key to greatness by no means but it has some weight.
