depression / anxiety medication questions
    #6594589 - 02/21/07 05:10 PM (16 years, 11 months ago)

My girlfriend and I have come up with the idea that she should see a psychiatrist for anxiety/depression. We have talked about it before, but always decided to rough it out...

I am slightly opposed to the idea of these drugs, but I have met many people who say that their antidepressants have changed the quality of their life dramatically.

She isnt too depressed, but severe cases come and go. It seems like everyday that she freaks out and gets mad/sad because of little things. Hair, school, all this stuff. The stress then lauches her into a bad mood, making her miserable for a long time, until something really good cheers her up.

I know what alot of you are thinking... "welcome to the real world" and id have to agree. I just hate to see so much energy focused on negative things, when she could be living her life to the fullest.

Since she has survived so far without any problems, I am hoping that a small dose will do her just fine, and also make it more realistic to ween off at a later time when things are going smoother, and social interaction skills inprove.

This is a pretty big thing, as I said, I am being pulled in both directions, and would like some advise. She will of course see a doctor, but from my experience will always write a perscription, and it may not always be the best drug or dose either.

Any suggestions on what to do, what drugs to stay away from, dosages, or personal experiences would be appreciated

i know EXACTLY how you feel. me and my girlfriend went through the exact same thing. I dont trust anti-depressants, because i think they cause dependency, and without them the depression would be even worse.

And i do hate to give drug companies doing things like that money. But definately see a psychiatrist about it.

Right now my girlfriend is on anti-depressants, and they seem to be working pretty well. it keeps her in a good mood, and gives her more stamina.

She was off them for a long time, because i forced her to stop taking them because we agreed it was just a supplement and not actual happiness.

But she went back on them, and things are doing pretty good right now. Let her try them, and if you both think its a good move afterwerds go for it.

good luck,
drew

You're at the right place, mushrooms are good for depression, when you goal in a trip is to do that sort of healing. I'm a firm believer in the mushroom. I used to be depressed and anxious all of the time, but I believe that mushrooms have helped my overall appreciation of life and being alive. Pharmaceuticals are very dangerous to your health, they say they are not addictive but the symptoms from stopping habitual use speak for themselves. Plants are the answer.

i don't think medication is necessary, she may very well just be a negative person on occasion.

many times you want to try to avoid medication as much as possible.

smoking marijuana also links to bipolar activity and episodes of depression.

I am on Prozac now and have been for many years. It helps in keeping the lows of occasional depression from becoming devastating. I would recommend them to someone who has frequent bouts of depression..however you should always go see a shrink to make sure it's not a more serious chemical imbalance in the brain. And talking with a professional usually cannot hurt.

we will definately see a doctor.

she doesnt drink or do any drugs either BTW.

She is not really the type to try any alternative medicine, or let psychedelics attempt either.

I am totally against those types of medicines, and i kinda sit in the same boat as you LS, but it worries me that she is negative every day, and she gets so sad about it cause she relizes that she is doing it, and how it hurts her loved ones but cannot help it at all.

i just want whats best for her, and while an artificial happiness seems fake to me, i cannot deny the quality of life improvements it can make for her.

we will see a shrink, and see what she says.

is there any medication any of you think we should stay away form?

well, really its just a question of quality of life, and if she is willing to have a chemically modified happiness....

to be honest i spent 14 years on almost every combination of mood altering perscriptons for diagnosis ranging from depression, anxiety, add, adhd and beyond...

what they did for me didnt hold a candle to how much better i felt after i started living my life differently and changing my situation for the better........

imo, the drugs are tools to cope with situations you feel you can not change, and should only be used as a last resort, or for people with serious mental conditions/ chemical imbalances etc.

I have tried to get her to see things the same way you guys suggest. This is how I feel, but its hard. She is not as open minded or hippie/new age, whatever. Very closed and structured.

I have suggested things like getting more involved in groups/clubs, etc in order to break her anxiety...and keep her busy...

but the problem is that she doesnt have motivation to do any of these things, and is deathly scared of them.

We are going to a psych on monday, I just hope they dont load her with drugs. Maybe something really light to help her get on her feet, and hopefully she can get off them soon after

its just hard to convince myself, after I have heard so many horrible stories of suicide, emotionless living, side effects, and lifelong addiction...it doesnt sound like anything i want to be a part of...

but i dunno what else to do

The key is to remember that they ARE misued and misdiagnosed a LOT of times and it is a chance game. However, you must also remember they WERE invented with the idea to help mankind and that each one of them does specifically target certain brain areas to help or it wouldnt even be on the market.

IMO, as someone with a partner wh suffers from severe depression I'd suggest you take alook into it, discuss all options and decide to give it a shot or not depending on the doctors information s well as your own. Depressin medication is very 'hit or miss' Its damn near impossible for them to accurately guess which medication will work right and what not.

I've known people on both sides of the spectrum as far as success with various meds like this. And its something you have to weigh carefully, decide and then stick with it for a while because no matter whicih route you take, its never a quick fix.

Also, no matter wha path is chosen I highly reccomend counseling, meds or not.

I've been on Lexapro for 3 weeks now and I am very happy with the results thus far. I think that some people are too quick to demonize SSRIs. Yes, they are often prescribed unnecessarily, but at the same time there are a lot of people that can greatly benefit from these drugs.
