Calling all wine afficionados/ people who know anything about France
    #6512532 -

Okay, here's the deal.
I have a friend who is currently studying abroad in France, and I'm trying to find her a type of wine that's both inexpensive and somewhat sweet, as she has a dislike for dry wines. I can't let her spend several months abroad without having some good wine, that she'll enjoy.

Does anyone have any suggestions for some styles of wine that will fit these criteria, and are available in France? Perhaps a sweeter, lighter wine?

Are Rieslings common in France?

i am not a fan of white, or sweet wine. I like it red and dry, I preffer Sicilian wine at the moment. I don't think you need to worry about her finding something to drink. I bet she could do better by actually talking to people where they sell wine in Frabce.

Probably.

Except for the fact that she's american, and most of the natives tend to dislike her. The people she's staying with are all fans of the drier wines as well, so there's no luck there.

Eh well, just trying to help a friend out.

Just cause she is American doesn't mean they don't like here, France afterall isn't USA with their freedome fries or what ever.

They have strict rules about quality. No chemicals or GM products. They take pride in food, they love to be snub about it to. If noone will help her pick out a good bottle, then she must be doing something wrong.

Riesling from the German border coutries are very good, so are the Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Does she like floral wines or oily types?

She prefers the floral type of wines.

Eh, she's only been there for a couple of weeks so far, and from what she's said it seems that the natives aren't very friendly; she may have some luck as she gets more acquainted with the area.

To get really good wine you have to be a member of a vineyard's wine club. Do a search for some out in the Cali area.. They are hard to get into but when you do you can get wine that they offer only to members. My best friend is a Sous chef/head qine guy for a very nice resturaunt in northern cali and is a memner of a few clubs. He has a couple bottles of wine that he bought through the clubs for $500. If the average person wanted that same bottle they would have to pay upwards of $1700+. I will e-mail him and ask him for a few good suggestions for you.

tell her to try a rosé. most restaurants will have their own house rosé that you can get by the glass/little pitcher. it's pinkish, and usually a favourite of people who don't really like wine

If she's studying abroad, she should go out and *try* different wines from different places while she's in France. I am sure there are other foreign students she could pal up with, if the natives aren't being all that friendly., The whole point of studying abroad is to immerse yourself in a new culture and gain some experience that you can't getting sittting around your local campus.

Oh here's my suggestion.: red wine, not from a box :-)

i would never go to France and drink wine from the US.

When in Rome, do as the Romans!

Riesling is from the French and German border, so im sure there is more there than here. What part of France she is in, will have a lot to do with what type of wine is locally available.

I prefer Italian wines myself

Rose and white zinfandel are the bastard children of the wine industry. most true wine lovers shy away from them. Same thing with Merlot, but id say Merlot is a little more respectful, to a wine snob.

that's the most rediculous thing i've read...

many wine clubs that are not attached to the vineyard are as cheap, if not cheaper than buying from the vineyard..
and, there are plenty of good wines that you can buy right from a retailer for the same price or cheaper than the vineyard will sell it to you.

--

as to the original topic... i would have recommended riesling, pinot gris, and sancerre.. there's some other smaller types that I can't remember right now.. I should go grab my wine textbook from school...

'sweet' really isn't the right term, either.. only dessert wines are really 'sweet.'

yos-

i totally agree, but if somebody has no taste for what normally makes a "fine" wine, there's a big chance that they'd find a rosé to be way more up their alley. while there might be something to say about manning up and learning to acquire the taste for really good red wine, and how that would increase your enjoyment greatly in the long run, if she was just looking for a wine to order for the upcoming weeks that she'll like and appreciate, a rosé would probably fit the bill. :ohwell:

if she wants to drink wine and be friendly with the froggies, she better not order rose IMHO.

I suggest she ask for a 'big fruit' pinot gris.

Im more of a Bordeaux guy myself.

here is a map of the Bordeaux region

Here is the Chianti Classico Region of Italy.

A true Chianti will come from the classico region, and a good indicator is a black rooster on the bottle neck.
