Having done a few COIR grows
(months back)
And getting fairly good results.
My take on it, is this.

To me;

Coir is a distant 3rd, as a bulk substrate.
Compared to # 1 & 2.
#1 being a tailor made compost.
#2 being well weathered h/poo.

Carbon-nitrogen (C:N)ratio
= Ratio of the mass of organic carbon to the mass of nitrogen in organic material.

The C:N ratio of Coir generally ranges from 86 to 180 : 1.

In Coir, most carbon is found as lignin and cellulose. The concentrations of available nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and micro-elements are low, while those of phosphorus and potassium are remarkably high (0.28-2.81 mol m[-3] and 2.97-52.66 mol m for P and K, respectively). Saline ion concentrations, especially chloride and sodium, are also high.

Unadulterated horse manure C:N ratio may range from 30:1 to 50:1
(dependent on feed)

Optimal cubensis compost has a finished makeup:
:rockon:carbon / nitrogen ratio <17:1:rockon:  ,
nitrogen 2.6%, phosphorus 0.2-05%, potassium 1.5-2.5%, calcium 1.5-2.5%, available boron <2 ppm, available ammonium <10 ppm, soluble salts 3.0-5 OdS/m.

Initially raw compost will have an alkaline pH. When mature and ready for inoculation the pH should be between 7.0 and 8.0. As the mushroom and mycelium grows there will be a drop of pH from the excreted metabolites until the pH reaches 5.0-5.5 at which time mushroom production will generally cease.

Coir can be supplemented with organic high nitrogen additives.
Such as poultry manure, worm castings, steer manure, spent coffee grounds, etc ;
to bring it's C:N ratio more in line with more optimal substrates.

To bring the macro/micro nutrient levels of coir up, kelp meal, or liquefied kelp/seaweed can be added.

How do you think coir fairs against straw? With straw costing so much more less, and not having to cook poo on your wifes stove, I'm wondering if it's worth spending the extra cash on coir instead of straw.

Straw (to me),

Is a contam prone 1 flush wonder.
(you do however get BIG guns, if done right)

I would use supplemented coir, before straw.

What amount of kelp meal do you think would be best? Maybe a Tablespoon per brick (like blood meal), maybe a little less?
I would imagine it wouldn't take much kelp meal to raise micro levels a good amount and would take alot to become toxic.

Assuming you mean the small bricks of coir.
I would be careful adding blood meal.
It's "N" hot. It can burn, if to much is added.
A teaspoon to a brick.
With kelp/sea-weed.
A heaping tablespoon, to a brick.

don't they make chemicals that can do this for us. Like ph up and ph down?

like a man made liquid that would bring -"C:N ratio more in line with more optimal substrates."

I suppose diluted liquid chemical fertilizers might work.
Everybody will CRINGE,
(especially RR) :wink: if I mention Miracle Grow.
It would take a lot of testing.
But, I imagine it might work.

Bone meal has about 2%–4% nitrogen.
It's a safe additive, in small amounts.

Yea, I figured after hearing about this new fad (Bulk Coir Substrates) I was extemely skeptic on its nutrition compared to things like Hpoo or Myco Nitro.

Coir's nitrogen levels are not a new discovery. Even coir's proponents are fully aware of this. And nobody has claimed the coir preforms as effectively as custom compost or hpoo. The bottom line is that when supplanted with spent coffee grounds, or some other means of bringing the nitrogen levels closer in line, coir can be an acceptable substitute for other substrates when they are not available.

As I see it, coir being the most easily accessable bulk sub in any city or urban area, it is the way to go for any beginer grower. For you people in rural areas it's probably easier to get poo and or straw.
Not only is coir usually easier to get than other bulk subs it also comes sterile and free of contams. This is also a huge plus so you don't have to pasterize or sterilize like you have to do with straw and poo. So for a strating cultivator this is not a bad place to start.

I just finished a coir grow .

I'd rather take a break from cultivating then waste my time using coir as a sub , IMO .

The stuff "fell apart" after the first flush and the results were 'Shit" compared to shit . I just don't like to waste my time . If I choose to do something , I try to do the best I can . I'd rather not do something then do it second rate . Call coir what you want , I just call it a second rate substrate . , IMO:grin:

I just wish peeps who do use it would decide to use it as a sub or a casing layer . By pure definition of the words , it CAN"T be both,lol.

I just don't use it at all . As I said , I just threw 2 bricks in the trash after trying it as a sub . I already knew it sucked as a casing layer .
