Yes, you will see a big increase in potency. The question I have been trying to get answered is it OK to autoclave the tryptophan/5htp with the substrate? A FOAF disolved the tryptophan in distiled water and injected it into the substrate (that he purposly left kind of dry)

You would have more responses in advanced cultivation.

i read sumthin somewhere that 5-htp increases the psilocin which oxdizes quicker than psilocybin and is less stable on a moleculer level. which would mean most would be lost while dryin so youd have to eat the fresh fruit. i could be full of substate but also intrested.

What do you suggest the best way to obtain l-tryptophan or 5-htp is?

Well, l tryptophan is synthesized from milk and a few other things...the method is rather in depthe but that comes from it being written by a person that is, well, a chemist of the highest class. If youre intrested in trying your hand at this, the amount of tryptophan you would make is enough to inoculate something on the order of 40 batchs of shroomies with enough to approximately double to triple the active components. Another good reference that you can look at is on this site, the article under the miscellanous documents in the cultivation section that describes the lab results in innoculating cubenisis substrate with tryptamine. Very intresting stuff. On the other hand i have no clue what 5-htp is, so a bit of clarification on that count would be welcome. You may also be able to get tryptophan in other countries...it was used here as an otc sleeping aid until the FDA took it off the market...and im not sure about the import status or how watched it is. If youre intrested heres the link to the chemists site...http://rhodium.lycaeum.org/chemistry/tryptophan.html Also, i might be able to help you with this....feel free to email. And this is my first post but i've been a lurker for something like 4 months now...love the site, love you guys. Stay frosty.

maybe thats why mushrooms that grow on cow dung seem more potent, because cow dung, and actually even human feces has some level of indole.

Zeus, or anyone else who knows, what exactly does this 5htp look like, does it come in a bottle like a vitamin or in a bigger bag like dog food? forgive me for my ignorance.

5-htp usually comes as a white powder in clear gelcaps. It's sold at every herb and health-food store I've been to. It's infamous for taking with MDMA (e.g. ecstasy) to increase your 'wig'.
The 5-htp on the market today comes from the seeds of the Griffonia plant.
In neurochemistry, l-tryptophan is converted to 5-htp, then to serotonin, the "happiness neurotransmitter".

I save my valuable 5-htp for eating myself, not for any fungus. Seriously, you'd probably see more consisten potency increases with better cultivation methods and substrates (think compost -- check out some of the Advanced Forum's threads on wormcastings).

This is an old subject at the shroomery, and it's been hashed out many times. Do a search, and you'll come up with the ponderings of many a shroom-pundit. The verdict? Very few advanced growers use 5-htp or l-trypophan, or other psilocin/psilocybin precursors to increase potency.
