Mustard seeds contain high amounts of tryptophan * 1
    #3085278 - 09/03/04 01:12 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Apparently, mustard seeds contain a very high percentage of tryptophan. Is it possible that they could be added to a whole-grain substrate to increase potency?

It's not a bad idea at all. I was just guessing about the price of mustard seed. I'll get some next time I see it.

According to this chart (bottom) mustard seeds have a slightly lower tryptophan density than soybeans. I guess soybeans would be way cheaper. Any problem using beans ?

Alien Substrate Formula claims to increase potency by 10 to 15 %, by adding quinoa.

It's a precursor to psilocybin.

Seems there is a limit in what can mushrooms can break down into psylocybin. Maybe whole rye grains or brown rice supplies enough tryptophan already.

Probably... but on the other hand Gartz got huge potency increases using tryptamine, which is just one step higher in the chain than tryptophan.

Edit: Thanks for catching my spelling mistake.

You mean "tryptamine" ? I always tought psilocybin is a psychoactive tryptamine. So why grow mushrooms if you already have tryptamine ?

Pardon my ignorance on this subject, but is tryptophan content the main reason why certain grains are commonly used while others are not? For example, why are rye berries used instead of wheat berries.

A friend has some quarts of wheat berries (prepared as if it were rye) that colonized beautifully. Wheat is also pretty cheap too, so I'm wondering why rye in particular has become a 'standard' substrate...

It usually works better than rye. That's why people perfer it. There are dozens of grains you could use, but rye is the best AFAIK.
