addition of Tryptophan to substrate/casing
    #3049401 - 08/25/04 06:49 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

has anyone experimented with adding Tryptophan pills to either a substrate or a casing layer? would a crushed or powdered pill of it be good? i mean would it DRASTICALLY increase contamination risks? and either way, would it be better in the substrate or later on in the casing layer?

any input more than appreciated everyone!

well, a "friend" is trying it right now with 250mg per 1 pint jars.
He made crumbled up fully colonized 1/2 pint cakes that were untreated with tryptophan. Then mixed the crumbled cakes halve and halve with treated PF TEK substrate. The only catch is that the tryptophan was added BEFOR pressure cooking the new substrate. He doesn't know if the tryptophan can survive the pressure cooking, but a comparison with the control group will tell. It has been 3 days since the "doped" cakes were made and they are just starting to recolonize. Only time will tell......
Any one know what temp. tryptophan degrades at?

Acording to this msds:
http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/TR/l-%28-%29-tryptophan.html.

It brakes down at 287C = 548.6F. So it should be safe to pressure cook eh? I don't think that there is any question about it increasing potency.
But how much is were it gets a little trickey. Too little produces little increase in potency, and too much makes the mycilium do squirly things.
Even though there is an amount to reference from "The Mushroom Cultivater". Who is to say how much will be the right amount for a particular strain is.

This is an intriguing topic ... is prepared tryptophan legal in Canada and the United States, if anyone knows? If not, are there any other tryptamines that can be used to increase psiloc(yb)in levels in mushrooms?

Tryptophan is not legal for human consumption in the US. It's because of some silly scandal with a tainted batch.

I have heard that you can buy it as a supplement for animals. It certainly isn't illegal, they just can't sell it for human consumption.

Its legal, I take it sometimes.....as its the Precursor to dopamine , serotonin,Melatonin.... etc etc(all the nerotransmitters in the brain......it also happens to be the precursor chemical for DMT, and really serotonin is just another DMT analoge anyway )

Anyway I take it sometimes as its a safe effective alternative to the the deadly SSRI's.

And besides, who doesnt want their brain having all the chemical it needs to funtion?? Trptophan is great stuff

griffonea seeds contain the most "natural" amounts .it's usually sold in a powdered form and is directly added to the substrate, they'll survive Pc'ing . i personally think quinoa is a strong enough and balanced substrate.
