MUSHROOM TREE
    #641504 - 05/23/02 08:27 AM (21 years, 10 months ago)

i was thinking the other day about when i was kid at school we were all taken to the play ground and a teacher broke a branch off a apple tree and a pear tree and swaped them around and taped them back and the next year there were apples growing and the pear tree and pears on the apple tree.so i think if you shave a bit off the stalk of a growing mushroom and pin another mushroom to it until they join you would end up with 2 diffrent mushrooms(say eq and cambodia) growing from the same stalk

no, I dont beleive that would work...

even thought they are the same species the 2 different strains would compete, on ewould dominate the other i beleive..

You need to remember that a mushroom is nothing more than a fruit to reproduce. So what your saying would be like taking a apple..cutting it in half and slapping a pear half on it...no it wont work. It's called graphing. You can graph apple trees with pear tree's etc but you cant graph a fruit.

Shit, any nursery catalog sells grafted trees. Some of them have like 3 different kinds of apple 2 kinds of pear, red and black plums, and peaches.

All on one tree.

My grandfather has grown an orange tree that gives lemons from one side and oranges from the other.

Really?!
I was told sometime ago by my grandfather (that hasn't any cientific knowledge about agriculture, just empiric knowledge that passes from generation to generation) you could only do it with close species (not like peaches, plums, apples and pears). Are you sure that it was only one tree? It's more likely that there was 2 trees - one produced pears and apples and other produced peaches and plums...

I don't have the botanical or fruticultural knowlege to say that's impossible but i find it's a bit hard to believe that one tree hosts such different species...

Yes, only species from the same family can be grafted to the same stock.

Apples and peaches on the same tree is not possible for instance.
